Post GABA

Anyone try it? Heard of it? Know of anyone that tried it? Supposedly you take one teaspoon at bedtime. I saw it at the drugstores and asked the pharmacist about it. He said he didn't know about the results but sell a lot of it.

Is this for weight loss? You might want to read Julie Ross's The Diet Cure. GABA is one of the supplements she recommends for some people. Her book gives a good overview and might give you a better idea of which supplements would be best for you.

Good luck!

Thumbs down

Upon reading this post, I did some research about this supplement- here is what I found: As it is currently promoted, GABA supplements do not appear to be particularly effective in stimulating growth hormone synthesis/secretion or promoting relaxation. The majority of commercially available supplements provide GABA in levels of 250-750mg – far below the several grams per dose shown to be effective in influencing growth hormone metabolism. Apparently, you would have to take a much larger dose than what is available, and it would have to be injected, not taken orally to get this result.

Also- this is very closely related to the compound - GHB (also known as the "date rape drug") due to its "sedative" and anti-anxiety effects. It doesn't look particularly safe to me, but I am only offering what I have read about it, I have not actually tried it. However, I did read that most who are quoting the weight loss effects of GABA are citing a 20 year old study completed in Italy on a very small group of athletes, which found that it did increase the levels of HGH (human growth hormone. However, no one has been able to repeat this study since.

Hopefully this helps and good luck to you!

-M

TY for all your replies? Anyone else heard about this?
It must not work or we would have all heard about it and/or tried it.
