Red face Mono symptoms?

Hello all again,

I have a cold now for over 3 weeks.....with a sore throat, coughing, and lots of mucus (sorry! yuck)
I have been on the anti-biotic Ceftin for over 2 weeks now for a suspected sinus infection, but I have this cold and sore throat (with tender swollen glands in my neck) that won't go away. I have been exposed to Mono around 3 weeks ago at a Christmas party (the host of the Christmas party was sick with it and still had the party) - anyway, I have been very tired and have been napping during the day - (I have moved into a new house within the last 2 weeks as well)
Does this sound like I have mono as well? And what are the "tell-tale" symptoms of Mono- Epstein Barr??
And what is the recovery???

PLEASE....can anyone share ANY information that they have???

Thanks,
Stefanie

I was diagnosed with mono a couple of years ago, but I think my symptoms were more on the severe side of what you're describing. I was feeling so bad, I asked my mom to take me to the ER, and that says A LOT because I HATE going to the hospital.

I had chills, high fever, and my whole body was sore. My symptoms were generally flu-like though I was not vomiting or nauseated. My throat hurt so bad, tonsils swollen really big. My back hurt very very bad in the kidney area, and I could not sit or bend forward because my liver was inflamed (so the doc said anyway) and it hurt something awful. My original doctor in the ER was going to discharge me with a flu diagnosis, but I insisted there was something more wrong with me and I wanted blood work done. I told her that if she wouldn't do it I would just come back after she discharged me. It was the end of her shift so I saw a different doctor who agreed with me and did the blood work. An hour later he came back with the test results, I had mono and strep throat.

Worst experience of my life I tell you, I was in so much pain. Like I said, I think my symptoms were on the severe end, I don't usually show symptoms of being sick until I am very much so.

The doctor in the ER gave me pain medication, and a fever reducer (I think it was ibuprofin but I can't remember) and I felt a lot better when the meds kicked in. He also prescribed a month's course of oral steroids (prednisone).

Squirkie,

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your life to respond. I've been doing a lot of research (thanks to the wonderful world of the Internet) and found out that there are severe cases (like yours) and mild cases.....it all depends.

I really don't know what Mono "feels like" but I have a blood scheduled for 12:45 pm today........

Wish me luck.
Thanks again, for your precious time.

Regards,
Stefanie

Unless you were kissing your friend or sharing saliva in some way, you can't get it from him/her. Mono is not contagious in that way--it is not an airborne disease. You an only get it from contact with saliva from an infected person which is why it is called "the kissing disease". However, you can just get it on your own. I had mono last year and unfortunately, I wasn't kissing anybody! I've also had it before. Contrary to what used to be the belief, you can get it more than once. The thought is that some people get it and the virus goes away but in some, (like myself) the virus never goes away--it just lies dormant for awhile.
I hope you don't have it cause it really sucks!!!

I got mono on my own too. I was working 2 jobs (one was a midnight shift, 10pm-7am), raising 2 kids on my own, wearing myself down, not sleeping properly, and not eating right. That'll do it.

Keep us updated on your test results, Stefanie
