I believe you mean helicobacter pylori...it's a bacterium that causes ulcers, among other things. Your husband sounds as if he might indeed have, if not an ulcer, at the least gastritis, which is similar.

The usual treatment for h. pylori is an antibiotic, coupled with antacid treatment, for a period of approximately 2-6 weeks (at least 2-4 weeks with the antibiotic and up to six weeks with the antacid).

If your husband doesn't show signs of improvement after a few weeks, it's possible that there is something else going on in addition to the h. pylori. He should definitely go back to the doctor. There are other bacteria that could be causing his symptoms, as well as intestinal parasites such as giardia, etc.

Hi
I've had H. Pylori for a couple of years & went through some of the antibiotic treatments (some of which were really awful). They didn't lower the count much.I tried a something I got in the healthfood store named Mastik gum. You take it for about a month or so. I think it is one or two capsules a day. Since I did that regime, my symptoms have improved tremendously. I don't need Zantac too often now. I haven't gotten another blood test because we don't have insurance right now, but I am quite sure it improved the problem quite a lot.
Hope it works for you.

You might try the Digestive Disorders thread as there were lots of posts on H. pylori there.
