Post Bulging Disc

I have a bulging disc on L5-S1. This is the result of foot surgery which I had in late November 2001. I spent so much time recovering with my foot up that my back muscles weakened and my already poor back (due to scoleosis) lost a good deal of it's strength. I have been dealing with the bulging disc for five weeks and need to see a chiropracter every other day to live with the pain. I also see an acupuncturist once a week. I began taking amitriptyline to dull the pain but don't want to take it for too long. Does anyone have experience with the best way to heal a bulging disc?

Also, a complicating factor for me is that part of my my foot surgery was not successful and this may be adding to the destabilization of my back. I had a bunionectomy and two osteotomies (shortening of my big toe and second toe). The podiatrist took this approach because of continuous pain under my second metatarsel on the ball of my foot. (It hurts to walk). The bunion is gone, however, my pain under my second metatarsel is worse. Has anyone ever been through anything like this? Can you tell me if you were able to get rid of the pain.
Thanks so much for responding!

Have you tried hydratherapy? This is usually available at physiotherapy clinics that have sports injury patients. Hydratherapy includes a good soak/massage in a heated spa/jacuzzi along with specific exercises to relax and strengthen muscles groups, etc.

First of all Amitryptiline is a mild anti-depressant that can help you sleep, but will not reduce pain. It is not a pain reliever at all. I suspect you were given it because you were showing signs of depression due to your pain. You should have been given a prescription for anti inflammatories, and real pain medication. Also your doctor should have sent you to a physical therapist. Next time you see your doc I would bring this up to him. I had a herniated disk a few years ago, so I know what you are going through. After you get the pain under controll you will need to do daily strengthening excersises to tighten those back muscles up. Your physical therapist will show you. Make sure you do them, it is very important.
Good luck to you, it is a long painfull process but you will get better with proper treatment.
