Angry anyone know about mono?

I went to the emergency room today because my throat was killing me and my tonsils had green and white puss on them (sorry to gross you out) Anyway they took my blood and diagnosed me with mono. I'm in tons of pain so I have pain killers. Its incredibly hard to swallow. Am I going to choke and die in the middle of night? My tonsils are so swollen that they are just about touching the little hanging thing in my throat. I feel like its getting hard to breath.. ughhh anyone have any advice?

p.s. even the nurse in the emergency room said, "someone is going to have to be hospitalized. "

If you are having trouble breathing you need to go back to the doc as soon as you read this. Your throat could be closing off due to the severely swollen and infected tonsils etc. Hopefully you have already seen another doc by time you read this.

Thumbs down

blahblahblah, I've had mono. What you described is normal. My tonsils were so swollen, too. As long as you can breath, you just have to deal with it (I know that sounds bad) but there isn't anything you can really do. I hope your case doesn't last long. I know how painful it is. I lost some weight because I could barely eat anything. My food would go down my throat so slow because it would take forever just to get it past my tonsils so I could actually swallow it. Now, if your tonsils swell up to where you can barely breath at all, then consult your doctor. I wouldn't make an appointment right now, because that's just what happens to people with mono. Call your doc and ask him if it's normal and if he thinks he needs to see you, then go.

I'm so sorry you have mono. It is a pain in the *** , I know. It's awful to have. That and toothaches are the worst pains you could ever experience. I truly hope your pain killers help. I didn't really take any pain medicine because I'm allergic to so many medicines! And it was AWFUL.

Take care of yourself, drink LOTS and LOTS of fluids (as hard as it is to swallow) and rest! I took medicine that would knock me out (not take away pain) but while your asleep you're not going to feel pain so keep on with your meds and I truly hope you feel better soon! I'll be thinking of you

didn't they give you anything for the swelling in your throat? Why weren't you admitted?

I had mono without the sore throat. Instead of those
glands swelling, my spleen swelled without me knowing it.

I was just exhausted to the point where after a few hours at work, I had to go home and couldn't even
make it up the stairs.

I thought it was just the weather.
(Hot)

So the fatigue eventually passed and I went back to work. After a few days, I awoke with the worst headache I think in the world. I couldn't open my eyes or even cry. The headache lasted the entire day, and I was running a fever, which started rising until it peaked at 105. Stubborn, I convinced my roomate to just keep getting water and ice for me. I wasno longer going to the bathroom, except for drips....
and not going #2 at all. After 8 days like this I was rushed to the hospital for Passing out right in the living room on the way to the bathroom.

I was admitted on account that I had a white blood cell count of 1.... and low red blood cells....
I was in the hospital for three weeks while they conducted every test under the sun including a bone marrow biopsy. Visitors and doctors wore respiratory masks so not to give me any germs.

They gave me a very powerful antibiotic introveiously in the ICU and waited for my counts to rise.
After just over two weeks, my counts came up a bit.
But my liver and spleen were both enlarged.
By now, they had discovered I had mono, and it got the better of me. SInce I did not address it,it nearly cost me my life.

After being discharged, I was put on strict bedrest because my spleen was so big. In my sleep my cat walked on me and my spleen bled. I was backin the hospital again for two weeks, and also had to get a blood transfusion from losing so much blood. I was released and was in bed for two months and two weeks.
I wouldn't let them remove my spleen so I had to stay still while it healed. (not that I was running marathons anyway)

I got atrophy from lack of movement. I went from 142 to 112 in this timeframe. I had to follow up with ct scans for four months after that.

If you can harldy breathe, go back to emergency room.
You may need more than a pain killer.

It effects different people in different ways but.....
why take a chance?
