Post cause of allergies

I've been doing some research about the underlying causes of allergies.. It seems to me that everything we talk about in here just treats the symptoms.. nothing realy addresses the main cause! has anyone ever heard of ******** (sp)? or does anyone have any ideas on this? I mean why realy causes allergies? an over active immune system? but what causes that? and why cant you just regulate it? or why cant you just get your immune system checked? and treated so that you are actualy treating the cause and not the symtoms? im sick of allergra !

I guess I am the ONLY one that questions this... too bad more people don't question it... maybe there would be more of a cure by now!

Wake,

Because an allergy is caused by your body thinking that the substance is a poison or foriegn body, there really is not much they can do. Even if they could "turn off" your imune system, you would then be suceptible to every illness in existence and have no way to fight it. Perhaps some day they will be able to pinpoint exactly what mediators carry the response to certain thing and be able to "turn them off", but until then, all they can do is supress them, thus your Allegra. It is just like anything else that makes you sick (flu, cold) your body has to fight it as it know how.

I know that SOME allergies can be "cured" by strict avoidance of the allergen for many years, but not all. Trust me, I completely understand your frustration. I am sick of my elimination diet, and sick of havig to give my baby and my todler hydroxizine every day. I am sick of seeing our epi-pens knowing that I will probably have to use one on one of the kids one day.

My daughter has nut and cat allergies - two that are known for getting worse, not better with time. My son, who is only 5 months old, has deadly milk and rice allergies, as well as who knows what else. These might go away, or they might not, due to the severity. I wish there were some magic to make them all go away ... but in all the research I have done there is none besides shots for seasonal allergies, which of course dont always work.

Question

what is hydroxizine? I have never heard of this...and I see what you are saying but I still think that there has to be more treatment for the CAUSE of allergies.. not the symptoms... it seems like there must be a difference between non allergy people and allergy prone people.. why cant you study the differences and try to figure out what it is? maybe its as simple as some type of deficiency.. who knows.. seems like a doctor would have thought of this by now!

Cool

Believe me, there are lots of very smart people studying this and other medical problems such as Cancer, Aids, SARS etc.

There is not a simple solution to every problem in the world. This is how the politicians that we have today get elected. You want a tax cut ? -no problem! - We don't have the money, we'll just borrow it!
