Need crown- advice needed re. phobia

I have to have a crown on a premolar on Monday and I have a particular phobia which I need to overcome. I can cope with most things the Dentist does but having had one crown about 15 years ago I remember with horror having to have all this gunge put into my mouth (impression) and feeling that I was going to choke. Worse still the dentist went off to chat to someone and left me to it. I guess the memory of that is making things worse. Has anyone had a crown lately? Have things improved? How long will I have to have the 'stuff' in my mouth. I feel a bit stupid but some advice would really be appreciated. Thanks Jan.
