Re: new dentures tuesday

Hi B.Bach

When I had my teeth (26) extracted I had a post extraction checkup the next day. The dentist took the dentures out, inspected his handiwork in my mouth and put the dentures back in without any problems. On the other hand, I've read on other boards of people taking their dentures out a couple of days or so after extractions and not being able to put them back in. The most common reason for not being able to put them back in was because the gums swelled up larger than the denture could fit back onto.

If you try to take out the denture be careful. You'll probably be able to take them out for a few minutes and then put them back in but that won't give you much relief for long. If you can see that the swelling has gone down quite a bit you should be ok to take the denture out for a while. Start with short durations of time and slowly make them longer. If the denture is still very snug on your gums and you don't want to chance taking them out try lifting them up off the gum a little to relieve the pain. If you have some ambesol or other tooth pain ointment put some on and put the denture back in place. That should help for a few hours.

With the sores beginning to develop you should see your dentist soon to work out those sore spots. Most dentists will see their denture patients right away. If you didn't have a post extraction checkup yet then you should have one fairly soon anyway. In the meantime, rinse often with warm, salty water. It promotes healing and feels soothing on the gums too. If you have any other questions please ask. There are some other new denture wearers here that may be experiencing what you are. Good luck!

Re: new dentures tuesday

per my post op instructions I've been taking them out to rinse with salt water since the second day after the extractions.but only long enough to rinse and put them back in.I'm scared that if i take them out longer than this i might swell up too much to put them back in.I'm scheduled to go back to the dentist on monday to have him examine everything and to remove stitches(i have some that dissolve and others that do not).but im really debating on dropping by there tommorow just to make sure everythings kosher i was really irritated earlier-right now its not so bad but then again im popping vicodens too =)

Re: new dentures tuesday

Hi again B.Bach

Try keeping the dentures out for longer periods. Start by doubling the time it takes to clean and rinse. So if it takes 2 minutes to clean and rinse keep the dentures out for 4 minutes. Keep doubling the time until you reach a length of time that helps relieve the pain. Hopefully, you'll find out that you can take the denture out for as long as you want and wear them for as long as they are comfortable. If the dentures are causing you a lot of pain you should be seeing your dentist on an emergency basis or not wearing the denture at all.

Re: new dentures tuesday

ola-went to see my dentist this morning never saw him but his assistant or the chic that does dentures came in ground on my dentures some and fixed it best as she could then rinsed my mouth with some kind of mouthwash type stuff and told me to come back in tuesday for the stitches to be removed, also said the dentist said i can take em out when i sleep now-so hopefully tonight ill sleep a bit better;I been waking up early cause the irritation from keepin em in so long.Anyhow after my visit i felt much better, went home put a movie on for my two year old while my wife took my 7 yr old to a b-day party.oh before i go further-there is a spot on my upper gum that is not a sore spot but a real sensitive spot where the surgeon had to cut me deep-stitched it bleeds a little everytime i remove the denture. So here i am laying on the couch drifting off to sleep with my two year old laying beside me,he looks at me smiles, and goes to adjust himself"BAM"accidentally headbutts me right into the worst spot in my mouth lol i cried and moaned for a good ten minutes popped a vicoden and went to sleep christ it hurt so bad=p.

Now as im writing this everythigns ok just drank some ensure thinking about what itll be like when i can eat real food again.

on a last note, while im sitting here rambling-this goes out to you yos and everyone else that posts here-THANK YOU -i lurked on these boards for two months reading yall's posts about dentures etc before i got up the nerve to find me an oral surgeon and get this done.I have been living with a mouthfull of bad teeth for over 4 years now suffering the pain and embarrassment etc due to my phobia of the dentist. If i wouldnt have found this board i'd probably never have gotten the courage up to go and get this taken care of-thank all of you-god bless
