Bump in back of throat

Hi, I was looking in the back of my throat today because I felt a bump and I had difficulty swallowing. When I looked, it is a lump about the size of a pea on the right side in the back of my throat and there are white spots all around it. On the outside of my throat, my neck is sort of swollen, but only on the side where the lump is. Can anyone tell me what it is or how to get rid of it, I'm kinda doctor-phobic and I hate having to go unless it's a real emergency. Thanks!!

I'd be inclined to think you have tonsilitis. (have you ever had that before?).
It must be a reasonable bout to have the swelling in the neck (which will come from glands working overtime to pick up the bugs).
Do you have a fever?

Look up tonsilitis and mostly there are illustrations you can have a look at to see if it's much like what you have.

You can try gargeling with salt water/an antiseptic lotion or mouth rinse (and spitting it out). Do this at least 4 times a day.
Increase your fluids to help wash bugs away.

If you do not feel better, do go to the dr soonish.

Thanks a bunch! It's nice to know there are people out there who actually take the time to read and reply to these. No, I've never had tonsilitis but my sister was a bad one for it. Actually, it has now moved onto both sides and the white spots are everywhere in my throat -- I know exactly what it is, strep throat -- and I'm heading to the doctor tomorrow! Thanks again (oh yeah, thanks for the salt water suggestion, it is helping).

Definately get to a doctor, they're there to help, not harm you know.

The only thing that bothers me is the point someone brought up to me "what do you call the guys who scored lowest in their medical class?...doctors." No offence if there's any doctors on here.

I have been prescribed medicine that i should've though and caused me very adverse effects. (i.e. Allegra-D when i have MPV)

Glad to hear your going to the doctors. Make sure they document your case so that way if it keeps reacuring you can get something done about it. I kept getting that and tonsillitis all the time and I would go to a clinic type place where they always told me it was sinusitis. I finially went to see my doctor and he perscribed zithromax it didn't work so I went back 2 weeks later and he refered me to a specilist it ends up the doctors werent documenting each of my cases otherwise they would have sent me to a specialist sooner. Needless to say my first visit with the specialist he asked me a few questions and told me they should have come out a long time ago.
