Unhappy Dementia

Hello,
My grandmother has been diagnosed with dementia about 2 years ago. It started out with a few hallucinations in her house (seeing people & animals), and now she's forgetting where rooms are in her own house, forgetting who her own daughter is, etc.. But there are still days she's right on! Days where she remembers things she sees & hears, and it's like there's nothing wrong with her. My question is--how bad is it going to get? She can still wash & clothe herself, but she still hallucinates, and forgets things. My mother is looking into assisted living for her, but how bad does this illness get? I hate seeing this happen to her!
