Question arthritis/rhem-arth and medications

i have osteo-arthritis ( hands, back, wrists) and a touch of rhem-arth as well and have been prescribed: fosamax - 1 per week; evista - 1 a day; viactin chewables - 1 day; HOWEVER i have NOT as yet filled the 'scripts. i am concerned about all these "drugs" and would like to know if other "girls" have used these meds and if so are there any side effects... problems etc ........... please and thank you in advance...........

Hi Perin -

Sorry to hear you having some pain these days. Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with the meds you have been prescribed. I think I have heard of Fosomax - is that for osteoporosis, too? Actually, it's funny you mentioned the Viactiv chews. I just purchased them yesterday! My Dr. said it was important to get extra calcium and the calcium supplements don't always absorb enough in your system. He said unless I can drink 4 glasses of milk per day (I don't think so!) then the chews would be a good alternative.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Have you tried doing internet searches for these drugs? Keep in mind, a lot of the side effects listed are sometimes rare or "worst case scenario." I've had concerns about different meds as well. But, then I realized that by law they have to list EVERY possible side effect anyone has ever experienced - even if it was just a few people! So, try to weigh out the potential for side effects vs. how the medication will help you. Also, it's good to ask your Dr. how many of his/her patients react or have sider effects to the meds.

Best of Luck!

Re Meds: Yes, always a concern when starting or going long term on stuff. I have had oseto and rheum arthritis for 26 years - took meds up till 5 years ago. Found out 5 years ago I was gluten intolerant and cut it out of my diet along with massive sugar reduction due to candida yeast problems. WITHIN THREE (3) WEEKS I WAS PAIN FREE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 18 YEARS. Seems like the "allergy" to wheat, rye and barley gluten triggered (NOT CAUSED) the arthritis flare ups. Others I've told this to have tried with similar reduction in symptoms. Result for me has lasted 5 years with only the occasinal need for advil or such. Hey, it's always worth a try. the celiac websites offer info on diet and substitues for wheat products.

I have Osteo arthritis and Glucosamine Sulfate has REALLY helped a BUNCH. I take 3 a day and the brand is Natural Factors. I got it at Wild Oats. It's $20 for 180 tablets. It's been a God send!!!!!!
