Are these results bad?

Hi everyone my GP thinks I should do something about cholesterol now, either drugs or diet. What do you think?

total 220

Derek,

Well, the numbers you've provided are only part of the equation. What's missing are your triglyceride and HDL readings, which are both very important. Your total cholesterol and LDL are by no means alarming, but your other readings are necessary in order to better ascertain overall risk.

Im sorry,

Total cholesterol 220
Triglycerides 138
HDL cholesterol 47
VLDL cholesterol 28
LDL cholesterol 145

It's not too bad Derek. The ratio of TC/HDL should be below 4 and yours is somewhat high with a 4.7.
If I were you, I'd try some methods to get the HDL's up somewhat. Helpful often are excercise (I often wonder if I'm repeating less than stellar info here), Fish oil for Omega-3 increase, lecithin, Canola and flax oils (again for Omega oils).

Always good to manage LDL: NO trans fatty acids (n0 hydrogenated anything.)

I'm curious about that VLDL. Do you know if they actually measured it? The result is so close to the "guesstimate" that's usually used, Triglycerides/5!
