Question Question on Oxycontin

I have used oxycontin awhile now at 10mg PRN. I find I can function taking it only once a day but with some pain. I saw my doc and asked to go to 20mg tabs but he doesn't even like to give oxy anyway and said no.

My question: Can I take two tabs at once or are there problems with that ?

Re: Question on Oxycontin

oooo...there a few good answers to this one, but the one that comes to my mind first, is that you will run out before your next fill and have to go through withdrawal, which is not very pleasant. Although is you're only taking them once a day it might not be so bad. Did he give you 2 a day 12 hours apart? I think it's time to find a PM doc if yours is not one.

Question Re: Question on Oxycontin - Shorline ?

My doc is a PM doctor. His Rx is 10mg/2x a day or every 8-12 hours. But a 10mg oxy is really 5mg every 4/5 hours so I find it is not enough. I can take a BT med (percocet) each time but the whole idea is to get a proper dosage. Until I can see another PM who understands this, can I take two oxy at once? (I will not run out before then).

Re: Question on Oxycontin

Ken, if you are asking is it dangerous to take 2, the short answer is no, it is not. But be sure you aren't going to run out before you get another prescription.

You are talking about 5mg every 4-5 hours.....are you cutting the pills in half? If you are, STOP...that is very, very dangerous. Never cut any long lasting narcotic tablet. Why not take 10mg every 12 hours and take a percocet inbetween if you need it? I guess I just dont understand what it is you are wanting to do.

Question Re: Question on Oxycontin

Carol -

No way would I ever cut oxy. My question was just asking if I could take two at one time. This way I could avoid taking percocet as a breakthru. I won't run out of the med. And I will look for another PM doc who really understands pain management and could give me the proper dosage. I was just concerned since I never took more than one oxycontin at a time. This just happens to be a special case since the dosage level he would give me was less than needed.
