Question NEED information On Breast Cancer Treatment!!

Hello,
My mom is 62 years old an was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Stiu(sp?)They did 10 lumpectomecies instead of full breast removal. Then she went thru radiation. With all that finished and everything is checking out fine they put her on Arimidex. WOW did that affect her..........she has so much joint and hip pain it is hardly bareable and she has been off the drug for 2 months. Of course the doctors all say it is not a side effect
Well now they are talking Tamoxofin wich I know is not a good drug. Can anyone tell me about Melatonin or Coenzyme Q10 for preventative measures. In my opinion I would not take anything as they think hers was caused by hormone replacement which she no longer takes. This is all so confusing. Please if anyone can tell me their luck or no luck with any of these I would greatly appreciate it!

Take Care!

Re: NEED information On Breast Cancer Treatment!!

Hi there,

I'm curious, why do you say Tamoxifen is not a "good drug"? Tamoxifen is proven to help prevent breast cancer recurrence in women with estrogen/progesterone positive tumors. It does have some side-effects, the scariest one is that it increases a woman's chances of developing cervical cancer. I've been taking Tamoxifen for 1.5 yrs and notice no side-effects.

There are a few other drugs that help prevent recurrence as well. I think that when it comes to cancer, you do whatever is necessary to prevent recurrence.

Has she had a bone density? She may need a calcium and vitamin D supplament in due to absorption issues. A friend of mine has been through similiar to what your mom has gone through, surgery, med, chemo, she too was on hrt for years but no longer for some time. She is taking a calcium supplament long term. She has had recent precancerous (in situ) and more had surgery and preventative medications are being suggested. The changes occured over a 6 month period. She has had cervic issues and is weighing that in the balance. Like Kalie said, do what you must to prevent recurrance.

Ask the doctor if she should be taking a calcium supplament and which type he would recommend. There is info on this out there that can give you a better heads up on this then I could in a nutshell that can help inform you better on the bc medications and calcium absorption issues, certain age groups... Hope she is feeling better.
