Hospitalisations...

Just wondering: How many Hospitalisations have people had in their lives so far?

Some related questions for those:

1) How long was your stay?
2) Were u always put on anything Intra-venously?
3) Were u always given Prednisolone to take home with u?
4) were u always given lots of nebs throughout the day?

I have just got my medical records from my childrens hospital and I found out that I was admitted twice a year for viral asthma and they always gave 4 nebs a day, IV aminophylline, IV hydrocortisone and prednisolone!!!

I was drugged to the eyeballs!

1) I was hospitalized three times in my life, all for asthma. Once when I was 9, 10 and 14. When I was 9 and 10 they were overnight stays, but the most recent one was for a week and a few days.
2) Only at my most recent stay - I got aminophylline and Solu-medrol
3) Yeah..
4) Throughout the night too! That was annoying!

Re: Hospitalisations...

I've never been hospitalized for my asthma. I was diagnosed with asthma back in 1995 when I went to the emergency room in a bronchial spasm during a really hot and humid day that summer. I had been having trouble for a couple weeks prior to that (all hot and humid days). My oxygen saturation on their monitor showed 78% which wasn't at all good from what they told me. They gave me a respiratory treatment, a prescription for Ventolin and sent me home.

I saw my own doctor a week later and he started me on a steriod inhaler which I used for a few years and then weened myself off it. I was virtually symptom free of asthma for the most part....when I did get an "attack" (which was very rare), 2 puffs of Combivent did the job. This past few weeks for me this year has been horrible; possibly high allergens this year. Anyway I found myself in the ER one day last week in a very bad asthma attack that I couldn't get control of. It had been on going for 4 days, and peaked to the point I had to go and get some medical help.

They gave me a respiratory treatment, and sent me home with a steriod inhaler (Flovent). I've been using it twice a day for a week now, and my breathing has improved and I'm virtually symptom free again. I think this time I might need this steriod inhaler for life though.

Re: Hospitalisations...

My daughter has never been hospitalized for her asthma although there have been atleast two times I feel she should have been. Both times her oxygen levels were low(low 80's) and her cough was almost constant and she was vomiting foamy stuff. She had pneumonia and we were giving her neb. treatments every two hours at home. It was EXHAUSTING!!!!! She has been on Prednisone several times. If I had to guess I would say four or five times. She is only 6.

I've been admitted 13 times now.

1) I'll do an average here, which would be 2-3 days, 4 at the most ---> twice I've stayed 4 days.
2) Not always put on IV meds. If I am it's only ever been hydrocortison, saline, glucose, once potassium.
3) Yep, prednisolone all the time.
4) In the early stages, esp. in A&E on frequent nebs i.e q. 1-2hrs, sometimes back to back.
