Questions about pap smear!!!

I am going in for my first pelvic exam and pap smear soon because I just turned 18.......... I am not sure if there's anything else they will be doing?? Do either of these things I listed hurt? What is a pap smear? Thanks

Re: Questions about pap smear!!!

The usual gyno visit goes like this: Usually the doctor will talk to you for a few minutes....when was your last period, what kind of birth control are you using, etc. Then he/she will examine your breasts for lumps. Next he will insert an instrument that will expand and open your vagina. This doesn't hurt, but it will help if you breath normally and relax. He will take a swab and collect cells from your cervix. Sometimes this feels a little "weird", but I've never found it painful. Most doctors will insert their fingers into the vagina and push up while pushing down on your lower abdomen to feel if your uterus and ovaries feel normal in size. All this takes just a few minutes and is not painful. The anxiety is much worse than the actual experience. Just try to relax.

Usually all they do is a quick pelvic exam to make all the organs are where they need to be and your uterus isn't prolapsed. A pap smear is where they scrape cells from the cervix to test for pre cancerous cells. Neither one is suppose to hurt but it can be a little uncomfrotable, I made it thru my first one with an infection so Im sure if I can do it anyone can. Good luck.
