Bleeding During Sex

Ahhhh! This is so frustrating. I have been having breakthrough bleeding for a while because of the birth control pill I am on (Seasonal). My doc says that this may happen for the first 6 monthes while on the pill. I guess it takes the body a while to adjust to not having a period every month. Anyway, I was going throughout my day without bleeding...no spotting to my knowledge. So, I went ahead and had sex with my boyfriend. Come to find out I was bleeding. Fresh blood. Not the brownish stuff. Is this considered breakthru bleeding, or is this a problem all together. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution. I need any advice or help I can get. This is so frustrating!

Re: Bleeding During Sex

Hello - I am actually going thru this same thing right now. And, your right, it is sooooo frustrating! I am about at my wits end! I am also on the pill Seasonale. I started on this pill the beginning of April and have had bleeding and cramps ever since. I went on this pill hoping to only have the 4 periods a year that it claims, but it has done just the opposite for me. My doctor said the same thing, that it can take the body 3-4 months to adjust. We'll, I've decided I'm not willing to wait that long to see if it's going to work. I can't imagine bleeding the entire summer! What a pain! I took my last pill yesterday and am going to stay off for 7 days and then switch to a different pill to see what happens. My blood was always the dark brownish color which my doctor called breakthrough bleeding because of the pill. Not really sure if the bright red could be something different. Let me know how you make out if you continue taking Seasonale. We can compare notes. I am going to switch to Ortho Novum 1/35 and see how that works for me. It is a higher estrogen dose, so my doc thinks it may make a difference. Good luck.

Re: Bleeding During Sex

I am so sorry you are going thru the same thing. I wouldn't wish this upon anyone. Goodluck to you on your new birth control. I think I am going to stay on seasonale and tough it out. She says once you get past the sixth monthes it is worth it. She says she has had tons of young women come in and complain about the same thing I am, and that it is frustrating, and many quit the cycle and jump on something else. I am lucky that I have an understanding boyfriend. He is in med school so blood doesn't really bother him and he knows what I am going thru. Thank god! Anyway, I would love to compare notes with you.
I just went to the doctor not to long ago and she put me on an estrogen supplement. The stuff women go on when they are going thru menopause. I have only been on it for a week, but she says it may build up the lining in my uterus and really help. I hope it does. Anyway, let me know how your new birth control works. I would love to know the cure for this frustrating problem.

Re: Bleeding During Sex

Hi again - Can you tell me more about the estrogen supplement? What exactly is that? Is it supposed to stop the bleeding? My gyn didn't seem very concerned about my breakthough bleeding and said if it wasn't bothersome not to worry about it. We'll, after a month it was bothersome, and I had the cramps to go along with it. She did have me double up on the Seasonale pills, but it only slowed the bleeding and didn't stop it completely. At one point she actually had me taking 3 pills a day. That didn't work either! I'm into my 3rd day now without any pills and I am definitely having a full blown period. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that once the period is done the bleeding will stop. Many on this board have said the only way to stop the cycle of the breakthrough bleeding is to stop the pill for 7 days and to have a period and then go back on. Soooo, I'm about to find out if that actually works. Your lucky you have such an understanding boyfriend. I just started dating this guy that I am crazy about and all this bleeding has really put a damper on things.

Re: Bleeding During Sex

I understand the blood putting a hamper on things! It does stress me out to the point that sometimes I make up excuses not to go see him because I don't want to be a tease. However, he does understand and he tries so hard to make me feel better about it. It is just sometimes it doesn't work.
Anyway, I am taking these estrogen replacement pills called premarin that has 0.3mg of estrogen. I am taking them with my seaonsale pill. What we are hoping is that taking a month of this extra estrogen may help my uterine lining build up and not bleed. Right now it just wants to shed because it isn't thick enough. At least this is what the doc says. So far it hasn't helped to much. I have only been doing it for a week though. I am hoping next week is better.

Also, my doc did tell me that seasonale is different. Most birth control pills it takes 3 monthes for your body to get used to and get on a scheudle. But, seasonale takes a good 6 monthes. She says is because you only have your period every 3 months (at least we hope we do). She says that it will be worth it to tough it out if I can I will love the benefits. I guess since it is a new thing when we first got on it they didn't know it would take this long for our bodies to adjust but my doc is finding that a lot of her patients that take this certain birth control are having the same problems as us. We will have the cramping too.

I am so sorry you are going thru this as well. It is very frustrating. May I suggest taking showers with your boyfriend? It makes you feel cleaner Anyway, keep in touch and I will too!
