PMS and Asthma

I am wondering if anyone else have experianced this. Most women are able to gauge their time of the month by the varied PMS symtoms. For example, some get pimples, bloating or mood swings. However, in my case, I can tell when its my time because my asthma becomes strange. Although not terrible, I am wheezy and uncomfortable and I can't seem to catch up. My neb treatments go up and nothing seems to work. It only lasts a few days but it is annoying. Has anyone else sensed a corrilation between PMS and asthma?

Re: PMS and Asthma

I have also heard that asthma can be affected by fluctuating hormones. I don't really notice a difference or if there is it is vague, but studies have shown a definite relation between the two (hormones and asthma, that its).

Re: PMS and Asthma

My pulmonologist said that it is not uncommon for women asthmatics to experience and increase in symptoms (or change in symptoms) with the onset of their period. He didn't say why and I didn't ask b/c it doesn't happen to me.

Re: PMS and Asthma

My asthma is terrible when I am getting my period. In fact that is one of the things I wrote about in my severe asthma post. Because in the last yr that my asthma has taken a turn for the worst every other month I have been admitted to the hospital for my asthma and each time I am admitted I get my period the day I go in.

I once asked my doctor if I get really bad when I am getting my period, then I should be better when I get pregnant. He explained it like this.

One third gets bettter/One third stays the same/One third gets worse.

When you have your period your hormones are really low, and when you are pregnant your hormoes are really high. So for me personally my asthma acts up when I am just about to menstrate. I find the whole thing very interesting! I have been keeping a journal for my asthma for just over two years now and there is alot of very interesting findings of when my asthma acts up. One major thing that I will mention is Caffine.

Hope all is well, Take Care
Jenn
