Post Recently diagnosed with MRSA

I just found out Wednesday that I have MRSA. They found it while culturing my urine since I've suffered a UTI for almost 4 weeks now. I've been on macrobid and levaquin(still on it) and now I'm taking bactroban for the MRSA. I gave brith to my second child June 3, 2004 after being induced because of a UTI and kidney infection, now they think I had the MRSA then(more then likely since I've been in and out of the hospital with kidney problems the last two years) which would mean my daughter, this innocent three week old little baby is now colonizing the bacteria. I feel horrible, but it's not my fault either, I didn't ask to be infected, none of us did.

On to the bad new I got today...

I've been having horrible back pain, so yesterday I had a CT scan on my kidneys. I have stones in both kidneys that are blocking the ureters, the biggest being 6mm. I have to see a urologist ASAP and am so scared that it will require surgery, this with only complicate the whole MRSA thing.

Does anyone know id MRSA can cause kidney problems?

Thanks for listening!

~Emily~

Re: Recently diagnosed with MRSA

Hey there emily.....sorry you have to go through what you're going through--it must be so tough.

In response to your question, yes MRSA can cause kidney troubles as can any other bacterial/parasitic infection of the genitourinary tract. Kidneys can often be involved in a complicated bladder infection because the infection ascends up the ureters and then gets to the kidney--which is why you can get back pain with a serious bladder infection. Additionally, if you are already prone to making stones, bacteria in the urinary tract can be the precipitating factor (pun intended) in causing stones to form.

Has your child had any ill-effects from your MRSA infection? And by the way, MRSA colonization is not necessarily a bad thing unless the bacteria gets in to a cut and causes an infection. It's also a bad thing if you're in the hospital as it can pass to other patients whose immune systems are already weakened.

Re: Recently diagnosed with MRSA

Ashyb;

MRSA, you probably already know stands for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The bug itself is actually not any more infective than a normal strain of Staph aureus, but the difference is that it is resistant to the semi-synthetic penicillins that are normally used to fight staph: naficillin, cloxacillin, dicloxacillin and methicillin (methicillin isn't used anymore because of its toxicity). So, I have a feeling that since you've been shown to be MRSA, you're on vancomycin. Is that correct? Have you been referred to an infectious disease specialist?
