Unhappy varicose vein on knee: is this normal?

I've had the things for years, and have even had them injected on three occasions (6 or so yrs ago). Last month I was kneeling down and OUCH I thought that I'd whacked my knee but not remembered, it hurt as badly as a bruise would have. I examined it and found no bruise. But a few days later, with good light and a mirror, I noticed a twisting vein---right on top of my kneecap! And it's been there since. It mainly hurts when I kneel on it; it's not red or ranky looking though. Should I be concerned? Is a varicosed "knee vein" normal?
