Post How to identfy a premature baby

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to identify the birth was premature or in time. My daughter of 3 Months age suffering from Cholic, She weighs about 2.2Kgs at the time of birth. Now she is about 3.5 Kgs. She given birth by cesarean, and I feel, doctor operated wrongly, even the maturity of the baby was not reached. Don't think like Doctors won't do mistakes, but INDIA it happens, they go for operation even the mother does not receive pains, this they will do for Money.

Doctor told us like the nails of the baby was changing to Yellow, means the baby was matured already. Is it true?

Hope someone will clarify my doubts.

Thanks,
Niranjan

Your daughter was a bit small at birth, but this does not necessarily mean she was premature. Even if she were a little premature, if she had no breathing problems, or feeding problems at birth, her prematurity probably did not adversly affect her.

The yellow tinge to fingernails on a newborn would signal prolonged contact with meconium in utero. Obviously this would be a rather silly way to tell fetal maturity since you cannot see the fingernails until AFTER birth.

As for doctors making mistakes...it happens everywhere in the world. Doctors are humans and they make mistakes just like the rest of us. If the woman is unsure of her cycle, the doctor may have difficulty determining full gestation.

Re: How to identfy a premature baby

Jlbalser,

Thanks for the response. I have few more doubts. I read many articles on infant colic. My daughter suffers from excessive crying. As given in many articles, her crying got reduced, when she reaches to 3 months old. Her growth is quite satisfactory. But still she is crying (1/2 hour) for most of the times just after feeding her mother milk and vomiting the milk. Then she stops crying and went into sleep. No other problems like motions, breathing etc. Is it due to Lactose intolerance? Or just colic symptoms?
Now my daughter age is 3 1/2 Months.

Thanks,
Niranjan.
