What is wrong with my stomach????

I have been having stomach problems for over a month now. I have lost almost 40 pounds because I cannot eat.

It started when I was eating I bloated up and my stomach felt all tight.
I thought I was going to choke, it kept feeling like something was trying to come up in my throat.
I went to a new doctor and she prescribed me Nexium. She said I had GERD. Well, I had an allergic reaction and had to quit taking in. I've also tried Prilosec, Tums, Zantac, and Rolaids. Nothing helps. Even when I just drink water I get the feeling like its trying to come back up.

When nothing was helping I went to my husbands doctor and he says it may or may not be GERD. He scheduled blood work to check my liver function, thyroid, cell count and everything came back normal. He scheduled me for a barium test but I am scared to have it done so I cancelled. If I can barely drink water then how would I be able to swallow the barium? Can I request a upper endoscopy rather than the barium test? I've heard the endoscopys are much more effective anyways. How far can they go into your stomach with the endoscopy? I don't think so.
He just said continue taking the Prilosec which I was for 3 weeks and no change.

I finally got in to see my regular doctor and he thinks it is IBS and prescribed me meds for it. They aren't helping either.

Here are my symptoms if anyone can help me figure out what may be going on:

Bloating, fullness comes and goes for no reason.

Even when I don't eat or drink anything and I try to burp it feels like there is a lump in my throat, I take a drink to clear it and sometimes it goes away and other times when I do swallow water or whatever to make it clear up it feels like I am swallowing an air bubble or something and it hurts going back down.

I have a strange grinding feeling in my stomach, it centers right around my belly button area or just right above my belly button. The best way I could decribe it, its like a gritty sandy feeling, like bubbles or rocks in my stomach.
The grinding feeling sometimes goes away but it is constant, it either feels like grinding or sandy, gritty feeling or it burns. Not bad heartburn just a mild burning feeling right in my belly button area and right above it as I was describing.

I am constantly burping up air.

In the last month since this started I have had maybe had a total of 3 or 4 normal bowel movements. The rest of the time has been diarreah.

I apologize for my post being so long but I need help! I don't know what else to do.
I have been looking for a gastro specialist to go to but most of them require a doctors referral, my physician wants to give the IBS meds a couple more weeks before he refers me. I can't wait a couple of weeks! And the ones that don't require a referral don't have a new patient appointment opening until mid October.

Re: What is wrong with my stomach????

Hi There!

Just wanted to say you sound alot like me...I have had alot of the same symptoms you have been haveing right along with the weight loss. Loseing weight is a good thing for me. Except when it's falling off of me because Im so sick. Gets to be scarry. I have had all the blood work ups also and nothing was found. I have had a stress test for my heart because of all the chest arm and neck pain. My heart shows no sign of heart disease whats so ever they tell me. ( and I worked that tread machine hard because I figured as long as Im here I better do it right) ANyway most importantly I wanted to tell you that I had a barium swollow the 2nd of this month. I too was petrified I can't even drink water and Im expected to drink the eqivelent of 3 glasses of soupy cement?I asked for the endoscopy but was told he first wanted to do the barium to see how everything is working. The endoscopy will show whats in here but not how it works. The x-ray takes pictures of you swollowing and it traveling down your esophagus and into your stomch. Than into your small bowel. The barium coats your esophagus and stomch lining. It will show any tumors, ulcers narrowing of the esophagus ect. Im sure Im missing many more things it tells. Anyway I have to say I cried all the way to the clinic. They told me to plan for 2 hours. The nurses that were helping with the test said 2 hours for sure. Sometimes it can takes as long as 4 to 6 depending on how fast the barium moves through your small bowel. If you are having the small bowel follow thru. I drank the first glass(cried) and thought I was going to throw up. I finished half of the second glass and had to go to the bathroom as it was already going through me. Which confirmed the IBS diagnosis they said.I was in pain by this point in my chest throat ect. I finshed the third glass and was out of there in less than an hour! I was in pain, thought I would vomit, spent the whole day in extreme pain all through my stomch, chest, arms, throat ect. ect. But by the next day I was feeling better. All worth it I asked myself? Yes cause before the test I worried about cancer, gastritus, ulcers all sorts of bad things. My results said I had a small sliding hietal hernia. Everything else looked very good. Food is passing through just the way it is spose to. No narrowing of my esophagus ect. JUST Knowing these results so far has made my symptoms better. Although,Im still having some of the same problems so it is now on to the endoscopy. They are also going to place a small capsule in my esophagus to monitore my ph levels. It will let them know the amout of acid that goes up into my esophagus. Im glad I did it cause I was thinking there was something wong with how I swollowed food. Or how it went into my stomach and into my bowels. Im just very releived that it is all working correctly. I know there is something wrong still, and hopefully the endoscopy will tell me what. But I know it's not cancer. Which was my worst fear.
So hang in there!!!!!!!! You CAN do it!!!!!!!!!! Takes coarage but getting the results back weather they find something or not can only help you be on your way to feeling better. Either by finding the right meds or having an endoscopy ect.... Hope this helps you some...
Good luck and take care!!!!!!!

Re: What is wrong with my stomach????

Both your problems sound like a candida/ yeast infection. For some reason the friendly bacteria in your gastrointestinal system has become unbalanced and needs to be rebalanced. You may need to take a antifungal drug like Diflucan, Sporanox or Nystatin to reduce the bad bacteria and re-colonize your system with friendly bacteria.
Eating yogurt and take a probiotic supplement may help. I use Stonyfield Farm yogurt but there are others that have other active cultures in them that are available at most health food stores.
I use PB-8, Enyzmatic Therapy Pearls, Natrol put out one --Bio Beads, and Primal Defense. THere are other good ones on the market.

What I have found is when you have odd symptoms that all tests results show everything is OK --- it is something that Doctors cannot test for-- like Candida or Yeast infections in the GI system that cause bloating.

God Bless---Harry

Re: What is wrong with my stomach????

Hi Harry....I have been reading up on my symptoms and have come acrossed articles talking about how yeast infections can cause esophagitis and a host of other problems as well. This was all brought on after a severly stressfull couple of weeks. I know yeast can go crazy when your body is stressing. I asked my doc if I had thrush in my mouth as my mouth and tounge feel like they are burning. She said no I did not.But I still wondered otherwise. I have had this yeast culprit in the back of my mind though wondering if it has some corrolation to how Im feeling. Thank-you for your insight Harry. Im going to get to my health food store and try the over the counter things you mentioned and also talk with my doc again about getting a script for nystatin. What harm could it do to take it and see if it helps... even if the doc feels im wrong on the yeast diagnosis. Once again thank-you Harry

Re: What is wrong with my stomach????

Jhamilton 30, just an FYI, my friend had many of the same symtoms you describe (felt like something was coming up her throat, lump in her throat, fullness, etc.). She had the barium done (she said the barium tasted chalky, but the procedure wasn't that bad for her), and found out she had a hiatal hernia, like lorilu2000. She has now been MUCH better on a special diet and medication. Surgery is a possibility for bad cases of hiatal hernia, but my friend hasn't needed it.
