Hi,

Re: Kidney donors please read!

hello...and good luck to the both of you....my companion received a cadaver kidney almost a year ago....the day before Halloween to be exact....he has been a type 1 for 30+ years....and he has run the gamut of complications from poor management of his diabetes....biggest problem being,he worked too much of the time....but after being on dialysis for 5 years...he was thrilled to be able to have a second chance....no more dialysis....but///the twice weekly trips to a major hospital 2 1/2 hours away where he had the transplant done....almost did the both of us in....he takes a study drug[not apprved for the general population yet]and the visits are now down to once every other month....he's now experiencing a lot of stomach upset at the present time....but i suspect that this is just another one of those complications of poor glucose control over the years...hopefully you and your brother are in a lot better shape than my companion is...will be watching to see how it all turns out...keep us posted

Wow,...so you know what we're going through! Other than stomach upset,...is your companion doing well?? Well, yesterday we met with My brothers surgeon. It was a pretty "upsetting" day. My brother John has severe vascular disease. They have decided to open him up first to be sure there is even a way he can "receive" my kidney. hearing that alone was like a punch in the stomach. Because of his bad heart they worry also about having him put under for that extra time, but that was our only option. They don't want to go in & take my kidney before they know exactly what they are dealing with. Because of the vascular disease(if things don't go as planned), there is also a possibility of him losing the use of his left leg. Another blow to the stomach! He has already been through so much that he seemed somehow unaffected by what the Doctor was saying. When asked if he still wanted to go ahead as planned all he said was "yes". Just plain & simple,..."yes". I will be prepped & waiting in another room while they operate on him. That will be the hardest. I won't even be able to sit with the rest of my family while they wait. I just cant tell you how very bad my heart hurts for him. I would give or do anything in the world to give him his life back,...anything. Well, this coming Tuesday is the day! They will start on him at 6:00am, & if all goes as planned, I will go in at about 7:30am. Other doctors wouldn't even take him on ,but this doctor thinks he can do it. People come from all over the world to this hospital, so I feel he's in the best possible hands. Right know all we can do is pray. Pray that he gets through this & comes out whole again. He's only 34. He's not done here yet. I'm so glad you wrote. It's nice having someone out there that cares & understands. I wish everything good for you & your partner because I truly know how deeply this effects everyone involved. It's been a while since I even checked back to this board because no one was responding. I thank you again for caring enough to write. My brother John has had 5-bypass open heart surgery, heart attacks, a stroke, his gallbladder removed,...& the list goes on & on,......so I know he can get through this to! Please keep in touch! I will too!
