Question Metrogel??

Hi everyone!!

I was hoping you could help me with something. I need to know if it is ok to use topical Metrogel on your face during pregnancy. Have any of you used it or heard if it is ok? I have been diagnosed with perioral dermatitis on my chin and above my lip. (It's terrible!) It is like a red rash and dries out. I have been trying the Metrogel twice a day for about a week and a half, but don't know if it is ok to use should I get pregnant. (I am trying to conceive.)
I understand it could take months for this to clear up.
Thank you so much for your help!!

Re: Metrogel??

I did a quick search on goggle for you. It says
"inform your dr. before using if you are pregnant or may become pregnant."
Also it states that the medicine IS present in breast milk when breastfeeding, so I would definately consult my dr. before using this.

Hi Steuby,

Thank you for looking that up. I have actually done quite a bit of research about it in the net, but it doesn't really tell you much. Erythromycin, for instance, is also Class B, but is used routinely during pregnancy. I have asked my new Dr. (OB) about it, and he said it is fine. He is only concerned about Accutane and RetinA. I know other things like tetracycline are also contraindicated, though. I am getting some different answers from pharmacists (though most think it is ok). I called my old Dr. recently. He delivered my first child. He said he thought it would be better not to use it. His nurse said he "didn't like it", or something to that effect. My Drs. here however, don't understand why I won't just take their word for it and not worry. I know that many pregnant women use the vaginal form of this for BV during pregnancy, but I have read that it (especially the oral form) should not be used during the first trimester. I can't get a clear answer about it--even the manufacturer won't say it's ok. They have to cover themselves to avoid litigation. I am hoping someone has used it or is using it during pregnancy and can put my mind at ease. (What's terrible is I think it might just be starting to help!)

Thank you so much for your help.

TC
