Are there any diabetics with hbp taking a diuretic...

Hello all, its me again. I just was wondering how many diabetes on this board take blood pressure meds? What are you taking and if you've had good results.

I am diabetic with mild heart disease. My cardio like my gp and endo insist i take some kind of water pill to help lower my bp. I take verapamil 240 and now they've added lasix 20. I was taking hctz for five yrs but it caused a steady rise in my glucose a1c and my cholesterol. When i saw my new cardio i asked here not to give me a diuretic bcuz of this. She gave me a prescription for lasix and said it would not increase my glucose levels. However, my pharmacist and others on the cholesterol board said it could. I truly need lower bp just to feel better, but i don't need high glucose. I already have signs of complications due to rise in my glucose and cholesterol.

Any thoughts or comments would be helpful.

Re: Are there any diabetics with hbp taking a diuretic...

Hi. I'm a type 1 age 45 and have had diabetes for 20 years. I've been on Vasotec (enalapril maleate) for about 9 years now. I started at 10mg./day but now take 40 mg. I was originally put on it to "protect my kidneys"; my blood pressure was only a little high then. It apparently keeps the little capillaries in the kidney's open, since its a "vaso-dialater", I think it's called. The medicine has worked wonderfully for me, my bp is usually around 120/80.

Carolh, is enalapril maleate a diuretic or an ace inhibitor? My mom takes this and her bp is very good as well. I tried lisinopril but couldn't continue it bcuz im allergic to ace inhibitors.

Im mostly interested to know of diabetics on diuretics bcuz i want to know how it affects their glucose levels. I read in my Diabetes Interviewer magazine that thiazides aren't usually prescribed for diabetics.

Yes I take Benicar and lasix. I also take 1200 mg of fish oil for my high cholestrol. I have to go to the bathroom all the time....
