Unhappy HIDA Scan for next week..worried

Hi All,
This is my first post to this board...I have mainly been lurking and reading horror stories about problems after gallbladder removal. I had an ultrasound and it came back that I have a thickened wall and lots of polyps. So now I have an appointment to have a HIDA Scan done. Has anyone had this. I was reading about it and it says that some people get nausea while having this done. That part scares me because I am already suffering from severe nausea and hate the thought of throwing up all over the person doing the scan. I am also worried about staying still for an hour. I am a person that is constantly moving so this is going to be hard! Any info or experiences would be helpful as I am near the point of skipping this appoinment!! Sorry so long!
Thanks!

Hi there - you're going to be ok....

I've had 2 hida scans done way back in '96/97 prior to GB removal. I won't go into great detail here because I've posted my GB story SO many times before that you can find it somewhere in the archives I'm sure.

Anyway, the hida scan may make you nauseous. It did me, and I was already very sick from my diseased GB. I didn't vomit, just felt nauseated. The worst part was when the CCK was injected into the IV, which set off a typical gall bladder "attack" - the pain was INTENSE!!!!

Anyway, that's how my surgeon knew it was my gall bladder since my hida scan results were considered "normal". Once the surgeon opened me up, he said my GB was severely inflamed and covered in scar tissue. Horror stories or not (and I suffer from bile salt diarrhea after GB removal) I would have the operation again in a heartbeat. The pain, pressure, nausea, etc. was gone after my GB was out.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Katie G

Re: HIDA Scan for next week..worried

Thanks Katie. You seem to be an expert on the gallbladder topic . I went for my HIDA scan today...I was nervous as heck which didn't help the nausea at all. But it wasn't as bad as I expected. I didn't have any cramping during the scan but did on the way home. I will find out the results on the 4th of Jan. and whether I will be having it removed (just what I need more waiting to make me nervous!)
Again thanks for your help through this! And will try to keep you posted on the results and will probably have many more ?'s then.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Donna
