sore ribs/chest

For about two weeks my side has been sooo sore. I can't sleep on that side unless i have the corner of my pillow to support it but not too big because it pushes and hurts even more than before (did that make sense?) I can't twist....I was looking at my outfit in the mirror and standing on my bed and when I jumped off i thought i was going to pass out....I don't know how to describe the pain though. It is sometimes sharp and almost takes the breath out of you but other times it is like sore muscle but worse. I orginally thought it was from coughing so much (i cought it the day after thanksgiving and have had it ever since......i think it may be bronchitits but i havn't gone to the doctor....yet) I looked on google but couldn't find anything that really fit my symptoms.....any ideas? Thanks!

Re: sore ribs/chest

Some questions for our help (or just for yours).
-How old are you (man, woman)?
Spontaneous pneumothorax is rare but it happens (I had it). It occured without any reason and I slowly started to feel discomfort at various spots in the chest. Through the night it became worse. I couldn't caugh or laugh or make a deep breath or move , because sharp pain stopped me. So I went to a doctor and she find a diagnosis with auscultation only. It was confirmed with x-ray later. It happens at slim tall young males under thirty in most cases.
-Is the pain changing with - breathing or -changing position?
Pain in bronchitis can be changed at coughing but it is not likely that body position or pillow would affect it. But pain at pericarditis or plevritis depends somewhat on body position, both are also worse at caughing.
-Does that cough mean you were ill at that time? (temperature, chills, fatigue)?
Viral or bacterial (less possible) pneumonnia. (But again the position would not affect the pain).
-Any recent accident?
Not a great force is enough to break a rib.

Re: sore ribs/chest

I am 15 (will be 16 in 10 days ), female, I can move but sometimes it is painful if i am in certain positions. I can take a deep breath and it doesn't hurt or anything just makes me go into a coughing episode. I have been coughing and such since thanksgiving and this pain started about 2 weeks ago so i have been ill this whole time. No, I havn't been in an accident. A friend noticed that i was limping on friday. but no one has said anything since.... (I am also on zyrtec, pulmicort, and rhinocort...) Thanks!

Re: sore ribs/chest

Sorry for late replay.
You've probably got some answers till now. From what you've said, I would first think about viral pneumonia, side effectts of pulmicort (coughing) or some complication of your asthma. (+ what I had written last time). But without body examination... If you' re still feeling ill, please go to the doctor, since these things can complicate if treatment doesn't start early.

Re: sore ribs/chest

i think it sounds like costocondritis it sounds worse than it is ...but its when your rib cage is sore and then you get sharp pains in your chest area ...hard to breath
