how old do you try crackers or toast?

Hi I have a 4 month old son (5 months in 1 week)and I was reading in what to expect to first year about starting solids, it dosen't go into the subject of crackers/toast too much just it can be a part of his diet.
he puts absolutly everything in his mouth now, he has been on apple juice, cereal and baby food since he was 2 1/2 months old, he was such a big eater (breast milk) that he was getting this acetone smell to his breath which to doctor said was from too much protein. He absolutly loves food, he will cry and cry until he gets it, refusing both breast and bottle.
the thicker baby food, or if I mix it with alot of cereal he will chew before he swallows (even thou he dosent need to)
anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
thanks so much!

Re: how old do you try crackers or toast?

HI wild,

I tried my son on crackers at 6 months old. He had no problem chewing and swallowing them. I was worried about it at first but I found crackers that are fast dissolving just in case and it worked fine he is 10 months old now and has been eating everything and anything. If he is hungry all the time that would make for a good snack for him.

Re: how old do you try crackers or toast?

HI
I'm new to this forum and saw your question. I would not give him any kind of commercial cracker including zweibach at all. They are all full of white flour and sugar.

He needs a lot of veggies and a little fruit. Fruit juice, if given at all should be diluted 1/2 & 1/2 so that his blood sugar stays stable. That will help keep that appetite at bay.

Any time we eat white flour or sugar it raises the blood sugar dramatically and then in a short time it drops too far down and we can become irritable and hungry and even seem to be out of control emotionally. Your little one may just be one of the more sensitive ones to the highs and lows.

Hope this helps,
Sandy

Re: how old do you try crackers or toast?

I didn't start my baby on food til she was 4 1/2 months old since my doctor said to wait until then. Then, I just had her on rice. I would avoid anything that is a potential allergen the first year of life including wheat. You can find rice bran crackers or something, but ask your pediatrician which foods to avoid. If he's 4 months old now, I would concentrate on getting him to like his vegetables and stuff now, otherwise if he gets too much bread, it is bad for his blood sugar. Talk to your doctor though to make sure.
