Harry,
BPH treatments range from watchful waiting to radical open prostate surgery. I`ve had prostate enlargement for many years now. Around 10 years ago, I took the herb route and started taking Saw Palmetto and Zinc. While it did help for a while, it never totally solved my problem. Last September, I went in the hospital for a procedure called a TURP. Basically, the surgeon inserts a type of cutting wire into the Urethra and trims away the part of the prostate which is restricting urine flow. It involves a hospital stay of around 3 days and about 6-8 weeks on average of recovery. There are other procedures available, Microwave and Laser to name a couple however the TURP is considered to be the "Gold Standard". For less severe BPH, there are drugs such as Proscar or Finasteride which help shrink the Prostate back to a somewhat normal state, however as with all drugs, there are side effects. The worst side effect I have heard of while using these drugs is impotence and the best is that men losing hair will tend to re-grow it. In fact, many men actually take Proscar or Finasteride in an attempt to regain their lost hairline. If you have a less severe case of BPH, you may very well benefit from using the herbs I mentioned. There is also another substance called Quercetin which can be obtained in vitamin shops. From what I have heard, many men find this to an excellent aid in the treatment of BPH. Good luck in your research and treatment of BPH.
