Can anyone explain this, re: t3

Hi
I have had a hellish 6 months. Had a baby in July and had been on .112mcg of levoxyl for past 4 yrs. Didn't change during pg although I think it should have increased. Baby healthy anyway!
Since 1 month postpartum I have felt like crap. I have been on increasing doses of synthroid (currently on 200mcg) and also time release t3, 5mg. Doc switched me to synthroid because he thought I was not absorbing the med. It just seems like everytime my doc has increased my synthroid I feel good for 4 days and then drop again. This week I got frustrated with these horribly puffy, droopy eyelids and stopped taking the t3 and increased my synthroid to 225mcg. Doc won't return my call because I wanted to let him know what I was doing. I really feel better without the t3. I feel I may need to increase the synthroid even more. I am sleeping much better these past few nights. Even thought the t3 was time release I still felt like my heart was racing and extreme hunger about an hour after I take it. Does anyone else have an experience like this or just not feel well on t3.
Thanks for any input.
Colleen

I take the EXACT same amount of meds as you do. I am on 200mcg of Levoxyl & 5mcg of Cytomel. Cytomel is not time-released & I take it first thing in the am w/ my Levoxyl. I felt better once I started taking it, but that is just me. It sounds like you need to get back in and get your labs done. I would go back to your T4/T3 combo to see where your levels are at on that. It may be that you don't need the time-release or that you would do better on Armour, maybe. What made you and your doc decide to try the T3? There really a lot of options for you to try, but a good starting point would be current labs on your Free T3 & Free T4.

Keav:

Congrats on the baby! Sorry to hear about you hard time. I know that this has all been extrodinarily trying on your last nerves.

Armour has way more properties that your body needs than either a pure t4 or time release t3. I have tried both myself and wish I hadn't. They aged me, destroyed my brain and left me in agony.

The new thing these days is an Amour/sythetic t4 combo. A lot of people appear to be doing very well with it. You can just dial back a bit on your t4 and gradually intro some armour. I think you'll like it.

Good luck!

Re: Can anyone explain this, re: t3

Zekat and Softcrush, thankyou both for your replies.

Zekat, the doctor started me on the T3 without really looking at my labs. He has drawn my labs every 2 wks since November. My last visit he said, "your labs look normal but I am not going by your labs, Just the way you look and feel". I must say that I don't think he really has alot of experience with thyroid. He was the doctor I went to for infertility. He knows me very well since it took me 4 yrs to get pregnant. I called him in desperation after I had the baby and was feeling so bad and had gone to another endo who wanted to lower my med even though I could barely walk. So it is really not proven that I even need the additional t3.

Softcrush, thanks for your input also. I am curious of what you are on now for meds. What did t3 do for you? I guess it is good to hear that someone else had the experience I had.
Bless you both,
Colleen

To me, it sounds like its time for a meds change. Some people, be it hormonal or otherwise, just do better on one drug versus another. I would see if your doc would consider a med change....some people just are not as stable on one thing as they can be on another.
