simple and complex carbs...

whats the difference between simple and complex carbs? How does your body react with these kinds of carbs? should you avoid simple carbs and only eat complex carbs to lose weight faster?

Re: simple and complex carbs...

simple carbs have a very simple chemical structure, while complex carbs are well more complex, think of the difference between a straight line(simple carbs) and a road map( complex carbs) simple carbs are digested more quickly, and complex carbs take longer because of their more complex structure examples of simple and complex carbs... simple carbs includes, sucrose( table sugar), fructose, (fruit sugar), lactose(milk sugar) so foods that contain primarily these simpler forms of carbs are known as simple carbs, also simple carbs are found in cookies pastries, candy friut juice, etc... now for complex carbs typically contain more fiber, and have a more complex chemical structer that takes longer to digust, examples are, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, corn, peas, limabean s,kidney beans etc.... overall we need more complex carbs than simple that's not to say that simple carbs are bad. we just need less of then. The reason? complex carbs have more fiber vitamins, minerals and phyochemicals.. simple carbs tend to be more highly processed, remember milk contains simple carbs and we definitely need the calcium and vitD from milk,so you shouldn't avoid all simple carbs..and if your going on a low carb diet the key is not to go overboard and throw out all the essentail nutrients we need for health and optimum energy in pursuit of a low-carb eating plan.. hope this sums it up for you.....

Re: simple and complex carbs...

What the member above me said, is right but I thought I would add a bit.

Simple Carbs are almost ready to be used by the system. So within 2-20 mins of ingestion, they are broken down and put in the system as energy. If you do not burn them, they are stored. ( fat ) Complex carbs break down over a long period of time. They slowly break down. This makes you feel full even after some time that you have eaten. They are a gradual energy sorce, releasing little by little energy. Have you ever heard of runners or athletes getting full the night before a game? ( carb loading or something ). They eat complex carbs, so they have it throughout the race/game.

Hope this helped,

Erind

Re: simple and complex carbs...

Not all but they are meant to be. Now they have come up with the bread that is meant to be eaten by old men with no teeth. So Yah, not all are made with comlex carbs. When they grind grains/corn, it looses A LOT of fibers, and breaks a lot of chemical bonds. I am not sure. But most do, try eating whole grain foods. HIGH IN FIBER, NUTRITIONAL DENSITY, AND COMPLEX CARBS.
