I totally sympathize. All my life I had dark, thick excess hair in many areas, most troubling on my chin and upper lip. It wasn't exactly like a man's beard and mustache, but boy, it definitely wasn't like most other girls' or women's facial hair.
I do suggest, DON'T BOTHER WITH ELECTROLYSIS. Until recently that was the only long-term hair-removal method available, but for extensive areas of hair growth with thick hair (like your and my situation), forget it! I wasted a lot of time and money in my earlier years on electrolysis. They have to slowly aim the needle at each individual hair, shoot the current down that single follicle and then they can't even be sure they really killed it. Very slow and iffy process.
Like you, I did all the temporary crap -- Nair type depilatories, shaving, tweezing, trimming, waxing. Like you, I always had lots of irritation and red bumps and many other problems, besides the main fact the darned hair was just too stubborn and thick and dense to really be completely and smoothly removed. There would usually be all this stubble and ugly ingrown stuff -- jeez, I hate even remembering all this. I used to cry and cry.
Just in this case this helps -- for a temporary (only) but adequate solution to the chin and upper lip hair, waxing worked by far the best for me. Unfortunately it was VERY messy (the hot wax is so sticky, spills and drips all over no matter how careful you are and can't be removed from most stuff, it's not cheap to keep buying the stuff, and takes a fair amount of time to do each day or every few days. But at least it didn't damage my skin as tweezing did (in fact, oddly enough, it seemed to smooth my skin from the damage tweezing and such had done), and the hair did stay gone longer, which was a nice relief.
But finally -- a permanent solution!! -- in my 40s, maybe six years ago, they finally came up with effective laser hair removal. By that time, with all the lies in the commercials from the hair removal products, I didn't think anything would work, but I have to say laser did! In my case, I had to get maybe 6 or 8 treatments over a period of maybe 6 or 8 months or longer, and it was expensive and the treats moderately uncomfortable. BUT IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT.
Be careful -- you must make sure you go to a reputable place because the lasers can damage your skin if they are not used properly. Now I go maybe two or three times a year for a sort of cleanup treatment (my lower face area), but my face looks completely normal, never like it did, just a few hairs sprout up like anyone might get. Also I did my arms -- I felt so masculine with this incredibly thick dark hair -- the hair was totally gone for a long time and now there's a little (because I don't want to pay for more treatments) but it just looks very normal, like any woman.
I regard laser hair removal as almost a miracle (although it really is quite sad it appeared so late in my life) because all my life I was so incredibly self-conscious about it, limited my activities such as not going anywhere overnight where I couldn't Nair or tweeze or shave, just wasted a lot of daily time getting rid of this hair which seemed to always re-grow practically overnight, and I just felt so much shame and misery over it. It was truly a nightmarish part of my growing-up and young adult years.
So, anyhow, hope you will look into laser hair removal. Like I said, make sure you find a very skilled, reputable practitioner.
I'm so very, very happy for you that this technology is available while you are young. It would have made an ENORMOUS difference in my life if it had been available then. I hope you will find it helpful too. Let me know if I can answer any questions.
