Unhappy Do all asthma stay this sick????

My 5 year was diagnosed with asthma about 1 and half years ago, he was doing breathing treatments with albut and pulmicort. He has also had a couple of bouts with pneumonia. He has currently been sick since November and on about 53 days of antibiotics. His current sched is Advair 2x daily, xeponex 4x daily, nasonex 1x, sethicin antibiotic 2x daily, predinisone 2days left on that. He has had allergy tests-NO ALLERGIES. At the asthma spec. they will tell me his chest sounds good, then the next day it is all congested. Is this typical of all asthma children?????????

Re: Do all asthma stay this sick????

My 2 1/2 year old has asthma and what your saying sounds very, very familiar. They have run all kinds of test and ruled out everything major but Asthma. Here is a list of what they have tested my daughter for since she was 1 year old.

Immune Deficiency - Results - Good
Some Rare Cilia syndrome - Results - Good
Cystic Fibrosis
Sweat Test - Normal
Genetic Testing (because the sweat can miss about 2%)
The genetic test showed no CF genes.
Polymorphisms - When they tested for the CF (genetic testing), they also tested for any known polymorhpisms and they found my daughter had two called M470V. One she got from me and the other she got from her dad. According to our doctor this is explains why my daughter has problems with her sinuses, because genetically she is more inclined to have more sinus infections than the normal child due to these M470V altered genes.

The sinus problems is our biggest trigger of her asthma. Granted it's not the only one. Just the cold are hitting her can make her wheeze but the sinus problems triggering her Asthma has put us in the hospital more than once. We have been trying to clear up an sinus infections since September and haven't done it yet. She's been on so many antibiotics, it's ridiculous.

She's had several pneumonia's, ear infections, chronic sinusitis and all of this in the last 1 1/2 years. We have her asthma under control a little better now, but like you say she might be fine one day and BOOM, problems the next day. Feel free to ask me any other questions if you like.

Re: Do all asthma stay this sick????

Thanks - yes- the asthma spec. says with all of the antibiotics, she's trying to clear up any possible sinus infection just to make sure it is not sinus causing chest infection. He's so tired now, and I get confused when I hear the congestion as to whether or not its affecting his breathing. They have not mentioned running this sweat test or CF. They keep saying his chest xray looks good too, but then I was told all they were looking for on the x ray was pnemonia-however you spell it. Sometimes my son will ask for help to get off the couch, and I can't tell if he is just playing around or if he's really that tired. When I go to pick him up under the arms he hollars ouch!!!!!!!! I just don't know what direction to go in, and it gets to the point where I feel like the doctors are tired of me calling. Sharon

Re: Do all asthma stay this sick????

They tested for CF in my daughter simply because she was having such a bad time with her asthma they thought they might be overlooking something. From what I've been told CF patients can have some pretty major problems with their sinus' and respiratory system, but apparently they also tend to have other more serious problems with digestion, low weight and slow growth, which my daughter didn't have.

Last September they did a CT Scan on her because she kept having ear and sinus infections. Her sinus's were stopped up. We have tried 3 different antibiotics since Sept and did a CT scan after each one. She still has the same clogged sinus she had in Sept. Before the last CT Scan they culture her nose to see exactly what bacteria was there, but her sinus's were still clogged even after 4 weeks of that antibiotic.

The good part is clinically she's much better now than she was a year ago. She takes Sudofed 3x a day. This has helped tremendously. She is also on Zyrtec 2x daily, Rhinocort Aqua (nose spray), Zantac (for acid reflux - according to the dr. this can trigger asthma), Flovent 4 puffs 2x daily, Xopenex or Albuterol as needed (she usually always get one at night and naptime), Atrovent as needed (again, I usually give one at night and naptime), I have found if I stay ahead of her asthma we are much better off.
