no hope ?

My mom has 4th stage lung cancer. Its in both lungs. They can't operate. They say she has 9mos -2 years WITH chemo and radiation (which will be given for pain). I don't know what to do or think. Someone, please give me some insight.

Beth98, I understand your thoughts. My father was diagnosed in April, began chemo and radiation in May. His Cancer was in both Lungs, Liver, Adrenal Glands at that time. Now, after the first series of Chemo, it has continued to spread. We are now using a second line Chemo (I see we because I have assured him that if he wanted to continue this fight I would be with him every step of the way). We had the quality of life discussion with his Doctor and my Father has decided to gamble and continue with treatment. Just be there for your Mother, enjoy all of the time that you have with her. Beth, I am in a similiar situation. My mom was also diagnosed with Stage IV NSCLC in June 2003. She is on a clinical trial using Iressa as a first line drug.
She isn't having too many side effects, but we'll find out what's up on her next scan in September.

I don't really know what to expect, I'm a nurse, but it doesn't help much right now. Wondering how long before she becomes symptomatic. So far only some SOB, but she also has emphysema and COPD so it's hard to know what to attribute to cancer.

Anyway,I wish I could provide some insight, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone.
