can he breathe???

Alright, my DS who is 12 days old does this weird thing when he sleeps ......he seems to be fine and then it sounds like he stops breathing, just for a second, but then takes a few gasps to catch his breath and is fine again. He does this numerous times....and I am wondering if this is normal, or if I should contact the doctor about him maybe having sleep apnea? I have a humidifier in his room constantly, which his doctor recommended at his first check up for the first few months....maybe it is too humid? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: can he breathe???

My baby girl started doing this in the hospital..... I FREAKED!!!! I honestly thought she wasn't gonna start breathing again, and when she did that gasping thing it sounded awfull! Fortunatlly all the midwifes assured me this was completly normal... she's 8 weeks now and doesn't do it anymore..
If your really worried though I would give your Dr. a ring, best to be on the safe side

Re: can he breathe???

My son did this too... it freaked me out. But the ped assured me it was normal IF he immediately (within a few seconds) gasped again. He called it "periodic breathing." If you listen to it, it will go in kind of a cycle, long deep breaths will become faster, faster and shallower until the little breathing "lapse" and then it will start all over again with the deep breaths.

Even though they assured me it was normal, I still slept with my ds RIGHT beside me with my hand on him until he outgrew it, at somewhere around 2 months.

Re: can he breathe???

Taz - my 20 day old little boy does this all the time too. Sounds like it's normal from what everyone is saying.
