Need Some Advice

I need some advice!!!

I'm 29 years old and I'm thinking abut getting Lasik. I have the pre op booked for this Friday Mar 18/05 and my surgery booked for the following Thursday but I'm starting to get second thoughts.

I've been reading a lot of information about people who have had severe problems with dry eyes afterwards and it doesn't seem to go away after the healing process is over and lots of problem with night vision when driving.

As for my eyes,, I am nearsighted (-5.5 Left & -5.75 Right). I don't have any problems with dry eyes now nor do I have any problems with night time vision. I just want to be able to see without glasses. ( I don't like to wear contacts)... Another one of my concerns is that I have very large eyes and would this cause problems with the halo's at night that I have read about.

Any advice would be helpful....

Also I'm getting my procedure done at Hamilton Laser Eye Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Has anyone ever had their eye corrected their?

Thanks.

Re: Need Some Advice

Hi there

Im kinda in the same situation. I have a consult scheduled for next Wednesday to find out if Im even a cadiadate for Lasik. I too have been reading about the dry eye stories, but when it comes down to it, I think I can handle dry eyes for a couple of months if it means I can see without glasses. what a wonderful thought.....to be able to see with my own eyes!!! No help with any kind of lenses!!! Im nearsighted too and I think that some people just dont realize how lucky they are to be able to see "normally"!!Sight is such a precious gift, and whenver you think of ny kind of surgery that may take that away from you, you get really nervous. But to me, I really want to at least try it.... As long as I come out of it still being able to see at all, it will be worth it for me......
Good luck to you, and trust your instincts to do what is right for you!!

Re: Need Some Advice

Hey,

I had it done two weeks ago and here's my take:

My dry eye and night vision were about the same as with contact lenses. It seemed like at the end of a long day my contacts would be dry and I'd have to put in drops to re-wet them. It was the same deal after Lasik. You're instructed to put in artificial tears in addition to the other drops you are given, so it never became a big problem.

As for night vision, I have been able to drive at night since the day after surgery. There are some halos around light sources, so I'd advise you to avoid the Vegas strip for a couple weeks, but driving around town hasn't been a problem, just a little uncomfortable. I also think it's gotten better, and I'm only two weeks in. I'd imagine that if you're reading this board you probably really want to get out of contacts/glasses, so I'd say it's definitely worth the risk.

Re: Need Some Advice

Well I had my pre op and after I choose not to get the surgery done.

Reason being, I was a candidate but not an ideal candidate. Because of my prescription (-5.5/-5.75) and my pupil size (7) with Lasik I would most likely had a reduced night time vision not to mention some increased halo effects.

With Custom Lasik my pupil and prescription were not any issues nor would I have any problems with nighttime, but my corneas were on the thin side. I could get the procedure done no problem but in the future if I needed any enhancements done my corneas would be too thin and I wouldn't be able to get the procedure done again.

The doctor that I saw was really good about giving me lots of information and being honest. He basically told me without telling me to wait a while and see what technology brings to the table with Custom Lasik and reducing the amount of tissue that they have to remove...

So for me it time to go get some new contacts and give them a try and wait for about another few years and see what that brings..
