I started insulin (at first, humalin and humalog, now, Lantus and Humalog) in October 2003. I had been taking Glucophage, but my sugars spun out of control. They were so high that they did not even register on my meter (over 600). I was very ill for almost a month. I had become glucose intolerant.
Within 3 months of starting insulin, I gained 18 pounds. My eating habits had not changed. My endocrinologist told me that that I was using my carbs/calories better. It makes sense, but I was very unhappy. I started controlling my portion sizes of everything I ate. Since September, I have lost 9 pounds of that 18 gained. I have have become a more active on a daily basis as well. I just want to lose what I gained. I was not overweight when I began insulin.
I do not have Type 1 or 2, I have Cystic-Fibrosis related Diabetes. I do not follow the typical diabetic diet, because it conflicts with my CF diet. However, I realized that I was eating too much for what my body needed at that point, and I took control.
Good luck. I know that this is very hard. I decided to take it slow and try to make some small changes, and eventually, my efforts are showing. This is my opinion only. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES.
