Question Unusual Throat Pain/Spasms...

for the over a month now i have been experiencing localized pain/spasms in the left/center of my throat just below my adam's apple. it literally appeared out of nowhere while sitting at the computer and hasn't completely gone away since (some days it's less noticable than others). the best way to describe it is that it feels like a combination of something stuck in my throat (like a pill) with the sensation of my throat collapsing/closing up. it's very uncomfortable...

i have seen several doctors (incl. one ENT). none seem too concerned, but i'm not too convinced of their "diagnosis" since they suspect "allergies"...i'm not allergic to anything...and i've never heard of allergies behaving like this. i have an esophagram scheduled in a couple of days.

some things that preceeded this that i can possibly connect to it are...i am learning to sing and often improperly sing from my throat instead of my diaphragm...my throat gets tired quickly. also, i've been under a lot of stress lately and there were moments when i held back tears and the tension was all in this area of my throat. i just hope i haven't done permanent damage to my throat because of it...

the reason i posted in this section is because i've also had what seems to be acid reflux on occasion...when drinking things like carbonated sodas, i get an immediate hiccup while swallowing.

if anyone can shed some light on the possibilities of what i'm dealing with, i'd appreciate it...

thanks...

Re: Unusual Throat Pain/Spasms...

is your throat symptom worse after eating?
worse at night, or while sleeping, or when you wake up.

what your describing actually does sound like a symptom of acid reflux.
actually very surprised your doctors didnt think that was the most likely possiblity.

Re: Unusual Throat Pain/Spasms...

if anything my throat feels a little better after i eat (depending on what i eat)...for the most part it is better in the morning and gets worse as the day progresses, by night it's in pretty bad shape. although it's very inconsistent and will come on out of the blue during the afternoon. i've noticed moving my head/neck in certain positions affects/triggers it.

yeah, the docs are a joke to put it lightly...needless to say i ixnayed the allergy meds after one day since they did squat to help. i was also prescribed nasonex, but i'll be damned if i'm squirting some steroidal crap in my nostril to treat my throat. oye-vay...and they get paid how much?!?

i'm intrigued by what i'm reading on globus hystericus. i have been under a lot of stress lately, and hope all of this is stress-related and will go away under better circumstances.

i go in for an esophagram tomorrow morning...hopefully all will be well.

Re: Unusual Throat Pain/Spasms...

so the esophagram came out negative...meaning they didn't see anything unusual. however, since then the pain in my throat has morphed into more of a muscle-type ache along the left side of my throat and under the left side of my jaw. it is most prominent when i tilt my head/neck to the right (essentially stretching my neck slightly). the pain is obvious and localized and doesn't happen on the other side.

i'm a bit perplexed as to what my next option is. i'm considering another ENT to get a different opinion since the first one was very rushed in his diagnosis. i just want to make i'm not overlooking something...this is without a doubt the strangest thing i've ever been through...and one of the most uncomfortable.

Re: Unusual Throat Pain/Spasms...

i was just reading your thread after doing a search on symptoms. i just realized this is an older thread, but what became of your situation?

is an esophogram the same thing as an endoscopy? i went to a gastro and had an endoscopy done and thats how they determined gerd.
