advice on belly button piercing

i've had my belly button pierced for about 2 years, and like it's been getting infected a lot lately and i keep it clean prolly not as much as i should be doing so at the bottom its red and inflammed and the top its weird looking and i'm starting back to putting this cream on it hydrocoritsome, to see if that helps any, i'm thinking maybe i just need a different type of a ring cause it's been getting infected a lot with the type of ring i have now. i was just wondering is it okay to take out the ring for a few days or so? maybe that would help some. and then put the ring back in and see how that goes? i just dont want the hole to close up and i didn't know how long you really have to wait until you can just take out the ring and not have to have it in all the time.

When there is an irritation or infection it is highly likely the hole will grow closed without a ring in. However, you may be allergic to metal in the ring. Sometimes when infection continues or repeats it is necessary to allow the hole to close permanently. Infections can become dangerous.

Cortisone preparations will not clear a bacterial infection. Check with your doctor for proper medication for your problem.

DO NOT remove the ring!

This could complicate the situation to dangerous extremes!

If a piercing is infected, the ring keeps the hole open and allows for the infection to drain. If that hole closes up the infection could become an abscess.

It is unlikely that it is the type of ring that is causing the problems. However, it is not impossible. Some folks have bad reactions to anything that is not hypoallergenic. Surgical steel is the best option for first-time piercings, but some people opt for cheaper rings and some piercers provide cheaper rings as starters.

Here's what you do: STOP applying cortisone cream. The cortisone itself will not hurt you, but the cream and the inactive ingredients it contains can exacerbate the infection, providing a warm, moist area for the bacteria to proliferate.

Keep the area clean and dry. Use a blow-dryer to get moisture out (low setting, of course). Follow with salt-water soaks four times daily. I forget the proportions needed -- do a web search and find out. It's a smallish amount of salt to a portion of warm water. You can pour the saline solution into a cup and hold it over the infected area for about fifteen minutes several times daily. Then dry the area. You can use whatever method you find easiest to keep the salt water on the piercing.

Do this for at least a week or two. You should notice improvement in a few days. The salt helps kill bacteria and stops them from reproducing. Even if you see improvement, continue with the soaks for at least a full week.

If this doesn't help or if you see that the infection keeps on returning -- you MUST see a doctor. Also, if the infection gets worse AS you doing the soaks (unlikely, though), you need to see a doc. Antibiotics may be required here if the salt water doesn't take care of the problem.

Just NEVER remove that ring -- and NEVER apply anything BUT salt water. You'll only make things worse if you don't follow these instructions.

If you notice any increase in swelling or redness or streaks radiating out from the area -- get medical attention AT ONCE as this indicates the infection has become very serious.

Many piercings go through an up and down phase during healing that can last up to six month or a year. Sometimes folks get repeated infections during this time, but many do not. Usually salt water soaks clear these up right away and there are no further complications.

However... two years is too long for this to keep happening. So give the salt water soaks one good try for up to two weeks. If the infection recurs or does not clear up -- you MUST see a doc to handle this.

Hope this helps!

Re: advice on belly button piercing

You might want to try putting hydrogen proxide on it and then some Neosporin. I have had mine piereced for three yrs and have never had a problem with it. I cleaned it with the proxide and put Neosporin on it for the first three weeks I had it pierced and mine has never gotten infected.
You may want to also change the ring. I started with a 14k yellow gold bar and then changed it to a 14k gold ring after three months. Now I can wear any type of metal. People have different opinions about what metal to use, but the gold always worked well for me in the begining when it was newly pierced. Also, don't wear any clothing that rubs up against it. I try and wear hip hugger jeans to avoid any contact with the ring.
Keep your eye on it and if it doesn't improve, I would see the doctor. I also agree with the other poster - Don't take it out if you want to keep it pierced. I never go without one.

A little advice don't use hydrocortisone if your going to use any kind of cream use anti-bactiral cream thats the only safe cream that can be used on the belly piercing. But anyway the same thing happened to me and they think I'm allergic to surgical steel maybe you should check into that.
