Exclamation Alchol after coumadin

I was in a traumatic car accident in oct 2004. I got a blood clot in my lung due to the accident and I have been on coumadin for 6 months. My doctor is taking me off coumadin this thursday and my friends are planning a party for me this weekend. Is it okay to get drunk after getting off coumadin so soon?

Re: Alchol after coumadin

NO! If therapy with COUMADIN is discontinued, your doctor will..should... tell you that the anticoagulant effects of COUMADIN can persist for anywhere from 2 days to a week...maybe even longer, depending on your present health history, PT time etc.

I'm just a stranger on the internet, so please don't use my info as gospel. This is just what I've gleaned from reading articles.

Obviously, the wisest (and safest) thing to do would be to ask your doctor.

I wouldn't take any chances so soon after discontinuation of therapy until you get his/her O.K.

Re: Alchol after coumadin

Zuzu is absolutely correct. Certainly, check with you doctor but drinking alcohol after discontinuing your Coumadin could have serious adverse affects including bleeding, stroke, or cerebral hemorrhage. chris
