Exclamation High BS Readings All The Time

Is anyone else having problems with their bs? One day last week I didn't eat anything for the majority of the day and was feeling ill...always feel that way when my bs is high...well, I checked my bs and it was extremely high. How is it possible to be that high when all I've had all day is water? I don't understand why this is happening. I also have cut out a lot of sugar and foods that I know raise my bs but it's still been high. I'm really confused. Can anyone give me some advice?

Re: High BS Readings All The Time

bbybyrd,
Have you been diagnosed as diabetic? If so, what type (Type 1 or Type 2)? And are you taking anything for diabetes (oral medications, insulin, etc.)? And how high have your blood sugars actually been?

If you are on diet and exercise alone, it's possible that it just isn't enough, and you need either oral medications or insulin. The body uses glucose for fuel and, when we don't eat, the liver releases stored glycogen (a form of glucose). Without enough insulin, the body still can't utilize the glucose, and the blood sugar will rise, even without eating a thing.

It's also possible that, if you were diagnosed as a Type 2, you may have been misdiagnosed. If you can post more info, perhaps we can figure this out.

Ruth

Re: High BS Readings All The Time

I have type 2 diabetes. I currently take Advandamet for my diabetes. My bs has been around 275.

Re: High BS Readings All The Time

My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and his doctor told him to take his readings every other day which he does after work and walking for about 15 min. when he gets home. His readings are normally around 100, but I don't know if the exercise before taking it is giving a false reading or not. Any ideas on when is the optimum time to take the test?

Re: High BS Readings All The Time

To get an idea of what your blood sugar norms are, you should take a day to do some extra testing, like a fasting morning blood sugar, and then check it 2 hours after breakfast. You could repeat the before lunch/dinner and 2 hours after lunch/dinner, and then take a reading before you go to bed. That would be 7 readings for a day, but it should give you an idea of what your bs runs. You can then check the information at Joslin's or the American Diabetes Association where they provide guide limits on what these bs readings should be.

The real test will come when you have a Hemoglobin A1C test performed that measures your average blood sugar over the past 3 months. From what I understand, 50% of the reading is the average bs for the past month, and 25% each for the 2 prior months. Under 6.0 is for non-diabetics, while you should try and keep yours under 7.0.
