The endoscopy wasn't bad at all. I went in, got the IV put in, they took blood pressure and pulse, etc. Then when they were ready for me they wheeled me into the room and had me lay on my side and showed me the thing they were going to put in my mouth (a little plastic piece to keep you from biting on the tube) and got the straps set up around my head. Then she started putting meds into the IV and I said something dopey like "this is fun" and the next thing I remembered was being in the recovery room with my friend sitting there. I don't remember the tube, the procedure, or anything at all.
For most people, the meds just cause short term memory loss. This is from the drug called versed. So you don't remember the procedure at all. Afterward, you generally just ask the same dumb questions over and over. Apparently I told my friend the same story about four times... But you won't have any long-term memory loss (except for not remembering the procedure). I needed some help getting to the car and then getting up the stairs in my house afterwards. I had some lunch and slept on the couch for a few hours and felt pretty much back to normal. I did have a sore throat that started that evening and lasted for about two days, but lozenges helped that.
So it's my opinion that the test isn't bad at all. I would much rather have that done than do the barium x-ray! It may sound unpleasant, but you sleep through the whole thing, so it's not bad at all. Just try to relax and not worry. Good luck!
