The spice Curcumin

An interesting article when I first brought up Netscape....Scientists from the U of California, Los Angeles and the Greater Los Angeles Veteran Affairs Healthcare System have been researching the spice Curcumin. Curcumin is a component of the yellow curry spice Tumeric, it seems they are finding in their testing on eldery mice that the spice reduces deposits of beta-amyloid protein in the brain which is the cause of Alzheimer's. They tested it because in India where the spice is a dietary staple Alzheimer's is very low. Linda115's post about Protandin said that Tumeric is one of the ingredients of the pill. I have read that Tumeric is used to treat many health problems. It may be true after all "Our food is our medicine" It's a lot more fun to eat then to take pills isn't it?

Re: The spice Curcumin

I think they are going to find out food and supplements are going to do just as much for us as statins, with ALOT less side effects.....

Oh boy, the big pharma guys will be having nervous breakdowns, as there goes all their $$$$$$.

Have a good nite, thanx for the info.......

Re: The spice Curcumin

gal,

I use turmeric (curcumin) to color my rice bright yellow (cheaper than saffron) but I like my curries Red or Brown.

Funny though, youd think curcumin would be the proper name for CUMIN in stead of turmeric??? Go figger!

Re: The spice Curcumin

Another one that seems to work at lowering cholesterol is cinnamon capsules . Only 1 gram a day does it . The USDA research arm did a study on this and found out it lowers cholesterol, ldl and triglycerides . I decided to try this and less than 2 months into this and my total was down 40 points . Had no effect on hdl though . I plan on keeping on taking this though . Go to the USDA webpage and do a search on cinnamon, cholesterol .

Re: The spice Curcumin

Vipergg22,

Do you take a particular brand of cinnamon?

I find that not all brands of supplements are equal - I like to get ones that others have had success with.
