JJ,
Interesting article...now if my parents were only from Limone sul Garda with the Milano gene, all would be well.

I see the sentence you are referring to but I think you wrongly attached it to the preceding paragraph that mentioned Dr. Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic. The sentence seems pulled from thin air by the author with no supporting rationale. There's no reason to suppose that Dr. Nissen or anyone at the Cleveland Clinic said anything at all about statins increasing plaque; certainly not from this article, anyway.

Re: Lenin.....Article and Quote..

I didn't say who said it, but obviously even the author couldn't have said it without some sort of medical backup. Noone can make a comment like that out of thin air, as I am sure someone from the medical field would be all over that person, especially seeing a few clinics were mentioned in the report.

Enjoy your day..

Re: Lenin.....Article and Quote..

JJ,
You said that a study from the Cleveland Clinic did a study that confirmed that statins increased plaque by 2.5%.
This is completely unsupported by the article you quoted. The article says no such thing. And it was you who chose the title of your thread: the Cleveland Clinic Study

There is a huge difference between a reporter giving an unsupported opinion and a valid scientific study proving a point. And the Cleveland Clinic did NO study that showed statins increased arterial plaque deposits.

Re: Lenin.....Article and Quote..

JJ,

Thanks for the info about the AIM protein!! It seems like a potential breakthrough in the treatment of CHD. I hope that something beneficial comes from it, and not too far down the road! I wish that it were here today - my mother is scheduled for by-pass surgery tomorrow morning, and I'm a nervous wreck....

Pfizer must believe in it if they bid over $1Billion to buy the company that produces the synthetic version used in the trials.

A plaque-volume reduction of 4% in only 5 weeks is absolutely astounding!!! Blows away the plaque reduction of anything else I've read about...

Lenin,

I believe the author in the TIMES article was referring to a Cleveland Clinic trial called REVERSAL, which pitted Pravastatin (40mg) against Atarvostatin (80mg) - and measured change in plaque volume after 18 months. The Pravachol group experienced a 2.7% increase in plaque volume, the Lipitor group experienced a 0.4% reduction in plaque volume.

To me this is a miniscule reduction for such a huge dose of Lipitor. I question the risk/benefit equation at this doseage. I think the AIM protein is a much more valuable avenue for the pharmaceuticals to pursue...
