Singulair side effects + another ?

My 8 year old daughter got diagnosed with asthma about a month ago.
Her doctor put her on singulair 5 mg. Beisides that it does not seem to
help a lot, it seems she has become overly sensitive and gets very
upset about little things. Has anybody else experienced anything
like that. She also has an inhaler albuterol, which she does not use alot.
After coughing for so long she has gotten used to it and she does not
think about using the inhaler. When should she use the inhaler?
When the coughing starts or when the coughing doesn't stop after
a certain amount of time? Thanks for replying

Re: Singulair side effects + another ?

My girls are a little younger than yours but they both have asthma, one worse than the other. I haven't noticed anything with the singular and both of my girls take it. I have however noticed the moody thing with my 4 year old when she takes Zyrtec during the day. I told my husband I would swear she had PMS if she wasn't four. Maybe the Singular is making her that way. It's worth asking the doctor about. Now I only give Zyrtec at night when she is going to sleep. Maybe try giving the Singular at night.

As for the inhaler, give it whenever you notice her coughing alot. I should help stop it. Do you have a nebulizer? It can be more of a pain sometimes but you can use Xopenex instead of Albuterol and it might maker her a little less jittery. I use the nebulizer at night and the inhaler during the day because it is easier to carry around. Albuterol raises the heart rate and causes my four year old to get the jitters and feel funny. This might be what is making her moody too.

Ask you doctor about Xopenex. It doesn't come in inhaler form, at least I don't think it does.

Re: Singulair side effects + another ?

I have a 8 year old. She has been on Singulair for 10 months. She is behaving the same way as you said. Also, she gained a lot of weight. However, her doctor told us that the weight gain can be because of rhinocort which she was taking one puff a night. We cut rhinocort. I am waiting fo the result. One month later, I will also cut Singulair to see what happens. I am afraid using the drug for a long time because it can cause long term side effects.
Regards

Re: Singulair side effects + another ?

Hi,

My 6 year old was on singulair for about 3 weeks. I took him off of it because he was getting nightmares, and was then cranky and sensitive all day long. Switching it to day time did not help either. He used to cough and cough. So although I didnt want him to be on an inhaled steroid, he now takes flovent 2 puffs a day when sick, (colds ect) and 1 puff a day when well. He takes his albuterol only if he has an attack . ( He has only needed the albuterol once this year) We had been at the hospital at least 6 times a year due to his asthma, he only had 1 visit this year since being on the flovent. I hate to have him on it, but it has helped his lungs function much better. We are also in the process of changing his diet (no processed foods, or junk ect) to try to get him well enough to take him off the flovent too.
Good Luck to you! p.s. have you tried a pulmonologist?
