Question cylert?

Hello, I was diagnosed with ADD about 3 months ago. The Dr. put me on strattera, I tried it for about 8 weeks and it didnt help me at all(except to lose weight). I asked to try another medication maybe ritalin or adderall but she said no to those and wanted me to try cylert. I had never heard of this medication and did a little research on it and it seems to be very dangerous on the liver and that not to many people take it anymore. Has or does anyone take cylert? I could really use some info from others.

Thanks. Tanya

Re: cylert?

I don't blame you for being leary of the Cylert. You have reason to be concerned. Some people do take it, but it is almost never prescribed as a "first-line" stimulant.

Personally, I wouldn't take it without talking more to your doc about WHY he chose that one for you. Even then, I'm not sure that *I* would take it!

Re: cylert?

I was on Cylert and I loved it! The only problem is that it's now being taken off the market. My doctor said that he had been prescribing it for over 20 years and it's getting taken off the market because of 14 reports of irreversible liver damage. When I was on the medication, my doctor had me come in every 3 months and have lab work done to make sure I was okay. I had no problems and wish I could have stayed on it.

Re: cylert?

Based on the things I've heard/read about Cylert, I'm surprised your dr prescribed it (before giving another -- safer -- stimulant a try). Cylert is really tough on your liver. Methylphenidate (Ritalin/Concerta) has been around forever & has proven to be really effective for a lot of people (children & adults alike). Same with amphetamines (Adderall/Dexedrine). However, a dr might be hesitant to prescribe these drugs because they've been extensively abused. Personally, my family dr was hesitant about prescribing stims until I was evaluated by a specialist. The specialist then put me on Adderall & I've been on it ever since.

Talk to your dr about your concerns. Hope everything works out.

Re: cylert?

Hey, thanks alot for replying, I will take your advice and talk to my Doctor about trying other medications first. If she is still hesitant about ritalin or adderall or something else, I might think of seeing another Doctor.

Thanks again,
Tanya
