Nasal problem

Hello, this is my first post on this site. I was hoping to find a thread for nasal problems, but since I don't see one, I thought I'd post here and hope maybe someone might be able to help.

My ten year-old son has a problem with his nose. For as long as I can remember, he's rubbed it viciously and repeatedly, a dozen times or more an hour, sometimes even smacking it. When you ask him why, he says because it itches inside, right up at the top of his nasal cavity, between his eyes. He also spends a lot of his time sniffing and snorting, to the point that I think everyone around him has got used to it. It doesn't hurt, he says. He won't say that his nose is stuffed, per se, but then I wonder if he's just so used to it being that way, he doesn't really know any different.

Another thing - a friend and I were looking at some old home videos from when he was an infant, and I never thought much of it at the time, but whenever he would wake up from his nap, he would rub his face over and over and over again on the mattress, like he was trying to scratch an itch. My friend pointed out that action might be related to what he's been doing these past years.

Strangely enough, whenever I've taken him to the doctor for one reason or another, asking about this problem hasn't occurred to me. I think I'll be taking him before the summer is over, but I thought I might post the question here first.

Any ideas on what might be causing this behavior? Thank you so much.

Re: Nasal problem

Have you looked into allergies. I used to be contantly scratching and rubbing my nose. I was explaining something else to my doctor and he noticed an "allergy crease" on the tip of my nose from rubbing it so frequently. After bring put on zyrtec the itching is pretty much gone. May be something worth looking into....

Re: Nasal problem

Your son has inhalent allergies or what is called seasonal allergies or possibly allergic to some foods. Have his doctor check him for allergies. Most likely an anahistamine will solve the problem if it is inhalent. If it is food allergy, testing or omission of foods to find what he is allergic to. Eggs, pork, wheat are the first that come to mind. He may very well have a wheat allergy and believe me, wheat is in most foods these days. Check out Celiac disease and you will find a great deal of info regarding gluten allergy. Gluten in wheat is the allergy problem.
