Asthma & Sports

Hi all,

I'm 35 years old I'm into playing tennis, since I have just been diagnosed with the onset of Asthma I've stopped playing tennis for a short time until I get my Asthma under control.

I am wondering if anyone else with Asthma plays sport? as it's good for you.

If you do play sport.
1. What kind do you play?
2. How do you cope with your Asthma while playing sports?

I hope that I get some replies to my questions,

Hi PreMedStudent,

Thank you for your reply.
Your story is very interesting to read. I really appreciate it.
It's good to hear from someone.

I'm a good woman I don't smoke & my husband doesn't smoke.
I have noticed to not stress out as it sets my asthma off, same with laughing too much.

I'm going back to playing tennis next month(Sept) as here in Australia it is our winter at the moment. I luv sports its good for you keeps u fit & healthy.

At the moment I have had to use my Asmol puffer 3-4 times a day everyday with shortness of breath & chest tightness, coughing. I think I'm using it too much. IS THIS TOO MUCH? As I have heard if u use your puffer more than 3-4 times a week your asthma is not under control is this correct?

I'm going back to see my Dr in 2 wks time to ask more questions as I have been experiencing chest tightness bad like my chest is being crushed it hurts, mornings it's been waking me up early.

I have chest tightness nearly everyday, when it starts I won't do anything about it to see if it goes away if it gets worse same with my shortness of breath I use my Asmol puffer then.

I'm allergic to dust mites, cigarette smoke, mildew, cut grass, I had sinus when a child now hayfever.

And yes having Asthma is certainly a challenge.

Once again thank you PreMedStudent hope to hear from you again.
Take Care

Re: Asthma & Sports

I am a dancer. I take at laest 15 hours of dance a week. I take albuterol 30 min. before I dance. I also take xopenex via nebulizer 2 times a day, advair 250/50, singulair, and allegra

It acts up sometimes...but overall it seems to be controlled pretty well.

Re: Asthma & Sports

Hi!
I'm new to this board and I was just recently diagnosed with Athsma right in the middle of training for running. I have run 2 10k's this summer, right before I was diagnosed, and my health was in perfect condition right up until the diagnosis. I don't fully understand what brought it on, but I live in Toronto, and the smog is very bad in the summertime. My doctor also suggested that it may have been triggered by bronchitis, and assures me that it will go away sooner rather than later - I'm trying to be optimisitc.

I have every intention of continuing to run, and I've been cycling right through it all. Our bodies/minds need exercise, and as long as we can control the athsma with medication - it should be fine... I'm taking Advair, and it's working very well sofar...

Good luck with your tennis! I hope you don't have to stop playing - if you live in a smoggy area you could always try indoor courts for a break... ?
