Help with gout

Hi im Kristal and my husband was recently diagnosed with gout . We try our best to only buy foods he can eat but its so hard every website tells something else he shouldnt eat. Can anyone give me a good list of foods and any information it would be greatly appreciated. Our lives are so messed up and we just need some help especially from other gout sufferers. He has a job, where he has to stand for over 12 hours and everday is different with the pain so if anyone knows what could help please share all you know.

Is he on any medications for it? You might try the old home remedy = canned tart pie cherries....not the pie filling, just the tart cherries. 20 per day. It really does work!

Re: Help with gout

Hi Kristal,

I will tell you what is really good to eat for gout. Dried tart cherries. You can buy them at specialty markets or big, giant grocery stores. You buy them by the lb. and they do not have seeds. They cost about $10. lb. Not cheap. But they last a long time. Just eat 4-5 in the am, then 4-5 midday, then the same in the evening. My husband eats them now every single day. They are a cure and a preventative (along with not eating and drinking certain things).

Now, for what not to eat or drink (which I am sure you have heard before):

No - beer, cabbage, cauliflower, liver, gizzards, hearts and no beef or pork fat. Like sausage. Some veges in the broccoli family are not too good, too often, either. When my husband eats too much of the wrong thing, he can feel a little twinge, like his gout is coming back. Usually in his foot/ankle or his hand/wrist. So, then he eat more cherries than normally and lays off the bad stuff for a long while! He just loves, cabbage and gizzards! He usually get gout around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Here (south), we use gizzards in our giblet gravy.

I am sure there are other things that are bad. Just stay away from them. Only use them as a treat every few months and then, not a whole plateful!!! :>

You can buy a book, that lists what all foods are made of. I think the bad thing is uric acid? Not sure, tho. You might already know what it is. And some people have too much of it in their body to begin with. There is also a medicine you can get from the dr., for gout.

Good Luck, to both of you.

High uric acid which is thought to be what causes gout is only partially caused by dietary selections.
Eighty percent of the uric acid is not going to be affected by diet at all.

Avoid foods that are high in purines and avoid foods that are known 'triggers' of attacks such as wine, beer, anchovies, sodium nitrite.

Usual meds are the anti-fungals: allopurinol and colchicine. Though some doubt the wisdom of colchicine.

Prednisone would be short term only and would be for initial pain, I think.

High water intake is usually recommended for someone with gout to help flush the uric acid out. Be wary of diuretics that might be Rx'd for other reasons.
