Cold Sore

Ever since I was little, I used to get cold sores....but it was rare...once or twice a year. Now...I'm 20 years old and I find I get alot more...sometimes to the point of one a month. The doc had be draw blood and I have HSV-1 and put me on valtrex 1000 mg pill to take 2 pills twice a day when I feel/see and out break. I take em...but they don't seem to do it. I've also used Abreva (sp)...soothes the icthing/buring but still takes for ever to heal up.

Any one know of any good OTC or Rx. meds I can use, any ideas how to prevent a future out break, and does anyone have any general info on HSV-1 (does that mean I cant kiss or engage in oral sex?)

Thanks in Advance

Re: Cold Sore

Well since you are already on medication from the doctor it really should be helping. Maybe it takes a while to really start working. Abreva works really well for my husband when he gets one. One suggestion is to avoid triggers which are different for everyone but I have heard that stress, certain foods with citric acid in them or anything acidic. My husband will get them if he has to much ketchup even. Also avoid the sun.

Re: Cold Sore

The number one culprit for me is sun or tanning beds.

Re: Cold Sore

I have been getting cold sores for years too. I found that stress and alot of sun causes me to get one. When I get that familiar feeling I start putting alcohol on my lip and I start taking L-lysine. If I catch it early it won't get worse and goes away fast.
